As a beginner, surfing can be overwhelming and scary. But I can help. I learned to surf in my mid-20s, so I know how to teach surfing to anyone. I wasn't a natural, and you don't need to be either!

BACKGROUND INFO: We'll meet at the Oceanside beach — one of the best, easiest, and friendliest beginner surf spots in North County San Diego. This surf break is centrally located in downtown Oceanside near two 4-star resorts, plus lots of bars, restaurants, coffee shops. The spot is really easy to reach by car, Uber, or train. And after your surf session, there are tons of nearby places to celebrate by grabbing a bite and walking around (I'm happy to give recommendations).

BEFORE WE MEET: Before meeting up, I'll give you easy instructions so you know the EXACT spot to meet. When we meet up, I'll bring everything you need and we'll meet in an easy public and safe location with lots of parking. Once we meet and say hello, we'll casually stroll down to beach — hearing those nice sounds of the beach.

WHEN WE MEET: Once we walk down to the beach, we'll start with some light stretching and warm up. As we stretch, I'll point out things to notice about the surf. We'll casually walk to the water — and we'll always stay in an area of the ocean where you'll feel comfortable. I'll be by your side every step of the way sharing tips, strategies, and advice. You got this! :)

I moved to San Diego from a small town in southern New Hampshire. I learned to surf in my mid-20s, so I know how to explain things to beginners — even if you've never surfed before and you're nervous! I come from a family of teachers, so teaching is one of my skills. I've taught dozens of brand new surfers how to surf. Many of them from all over the world, and some people who aren't even great swimmers (and they've still had a blast). Surfing is my favorite way to escape, relax, get outside, and have a great workout. I can't wait to help you experience the same joy, freedom, and bliss I feel when I'm surfing!

We'll catch fun waves in the small, safe, beginner-friendly area of Oceanside. Sometimes, you'll even see seals and pods dolphins playing in the water with you! Oceanside is one of the most beautiful beaches in the north county of San Diego, with gorgeous sand, water, and views (plus, one of the longest wooden piers on the west coast). It's a world-class area for surf known by surfers all over, so you'll be getting a world-class treatment!

David was exceptionally thoughtful, communicative, and focused on making sure the experience was a great one. I found him very easy to talk to and get along with and I had a great time learning some surf basics with him. He consistently asked how I was feeling and made sure to be available and willing to answer any questions or address any concerns. I highly recommend both this experience and David as a leader.

This is THE BEST Airbnb Experience I’ve ever done (and I’ve probably done about a dozen by now)! David was an exceptionally wonderful host. He was very responsive, told me what to bring, and was patient when I texted him that I was running late. David has an infectious energy and is a fabulous instructor. He is very clear in his instructions and he teaches you everything from how to properly carry a surfboard to how to make sure you can actually ride those waves and stay on your board. He provides you sunscreen if you need it, a towel to dry off after, water, and the best protein bar I have ever had. If you need somewhere to store your things, you can use his car, which he parks right near the ocean. Surfing has been on my bucket list forever and even though I’m not a great swimmer, I had a great time and would love to take David’s experience again. I highly recommend it for anyone visiting San Diego, wanting to check “surfing” off their bucket list, or simply looking to make a great friend. Thanks for everything David!
