Τι θα κάνετε
I would guide you not just on an offbeat walk, but also help you to take better photographs, whether it be framing street scenes or taking portraits of strangers. Kyoto is very well known for its temples, shrines, gardens, and, of course, its geisha culture. What we would do on our photo walk is cover the back streets of Gion, not only in search of the elusive geisha and apprentice maiko, but of the city's numerous local characters. We'll start in the back streets of Gion crisscrossing the neighbourhood, taking in Kenninji Temple, slowly making our way north to the beautiful canal area of Gion Shirakawa, and, with time permitting, explore and shoot the photogenic areas of Maruyama Koen, Sannenzaka, the Kamo River and/or Kiyamachi nightlife district. Along the way, I would provide tips on how to better understand photographing your environment and help you with your confidence in approaching and photographing strangers. Hopefully, you'll have a great time and it will make you a better photographer not only in your travels but upon your return home as well.
Ο οικοδεσπότης σας
A native of Los Angeles, I've lived in Kyoto for seven years, Japan for more than a decade. I've led or will lead photo walks in Kyoto, Taipei, Seoul, Sydney and elsewhere. I do occasional commercial work but am more involved in fine arts photography. I published my first photo book, Sunlanders, in London in 2016 and will have a new book published in Tokyo this autumn. My photography is represented by galleries in Antwerp and Paris. I shoot film but also love using my iPhone X on long walks. I've taught street photography workshops in Kyoto, Taipei, Seoul, and Sydney, Australia. I am also a longtime host in Kyoto with two of the most beloved airbnb spaces in the city, The Cocoon Room and the Moon Room. I look forward to walking and seeing the city with you.

We'll cover the back streets of Gion's Floating World, Kenninji Temple, Gion Shirakawa canal district, and (time permitting) some of Maruyama Koen and Sannenzaka, Kamo River and/or Kiyamachi districts. I never take clients on a firmly set route, but tend to follow the light, as well as intuition.
