Ο χώρος
A very warm welcome to Isfryn from your hosts Steve and Linda. Isfryn (which means ‘under the hill’ in Welsh) forms a completely self-contained property, separated by 3ft thick walls of slate from Ty Hebron, the adjoining former Methodist chapel, which is now our home. Isfryn was built in the 1870s as a home for the chapel minister. We bought it in June 2015, when it was in a neglected state. It was fully renovated over the following 6 months and opened for visitors in Spring 2016.

Renovating this cottage was a very happy experience, which we hope is reflected in its cheerful and welcoming interior. It offers cosy and comfortable accommodation for two adults.

To make you feel at home from the moment you arrive, you will be greeted by a welcome basket of goodies, many of which will have been carefully prepared by us. Having fully explored that, you can explore the rest of the cottage…

In the living room, the most prominent feature is an open hearth with hearth stones of beautiful local slate, which connects this room with the dining room beyond. It contains a double sided wood burner, so you don’t need to leave your warm and cosy fire behind when you go to eat at the table! The living room has a big, comfortable sofa with large footstool extension, satellite TV, free WiFi (we have high speed fibre optic broadband), DVD player, a selection of DVDs and well stocked book shelves. In the bureau, you will find a variety of games, so in the event of inclement weather, you can settle comfortably indoors and be well entertained. As with the rest of the house, the walls are decorated with original prints, many by local artists. In the living room, you will find two USB charging sockets so that you can conveniently charge up any electronic items.

The dining room furniture, which dates from the mid 1800s, was bought by Linda with money left to her by her grandmother and was used in her own house for many years. We are delighted to share it with you now and hope you enjoy the presence of furniture appropriate to the age of the cottage. If you like music to dine by, you will find a CD player and a variety of CDs on the buffet stand.

We have tried to make maximum use of the space in Isfryn to offer you everything you need for your holiday. In this spirit, in the cupboard under the stairs you will find a washer/dryer, washing liquid and fabric conditioner, a table top dishwasher, dishwashing tablets, an iron and a table top ironing board.

The kitchen has an induction hob, electric oven, microwave, fridge with a small freezer compartment and a kettle. You’ll find the basics like tea and coffee, sugar, cooking oil, salt and pepper, cling film and foil waiting for you. (Fresh milk and butter will be provided as part of your Welcome Pack.)

A rear porch completes the ground floor and offers coat hooks and a boot rack for muddy or wet footwear.

Upstairs, the bedroom contains a super-comfy, super-king sized bed which can be converted to twin beds if desired. There is a charming, up-cycled wardrobe dating from the era when it was felt useful to have shelves labelled to tell you where to keep your socks and underwear! In the bedside table drawers, you will find a hairdryer, and a cooling mat in case you bring your straighteners. There is another well-stocked book shelf to make sure you can read yourself into a peaceful sleep.

The large landing is set up as an additional sitting room. Yet another bookshelf ensures that passing comfortable afternoons curled up on the day bed lost in a good book, or reading yourself into a comfortable doze is also an option here.

The bathroom has a large, walk in shower with both drench and hand held shower heads, a toilet, a heated towel rail, an illuminated mirror with shaving point and a magnifying mirror. You will find basics such as hand soap, toilet rolls, cotton wool, cotton buds and tissues provided for you.

We provide all bed linen, a choice of pillows, towels, tea towels and waffle-weave bathrobes for your comfort.

All utilities are included. We provide you with two baskets of logs for the wood burner and you will be able to purchase further bags from us if you need them. Your Welcome Pack will include some lovely things to get you started, but you can easily stock up on the essentials nearby.

The whole of Isfryn Cottage is yours! You're also welcome to use the front patio which we share. There's a small back yard too.

Please note that there are 7 steps to reach the front door and a steep inside stairway to the landing so, if this would cause you any problem Isfryn may not be the ideal cottage for you.

Άλλα στοιχεία που πρέπει να γνωρίζετε
There is parking for a small car on our drive and roadside parking within 100m. The lane is very quiet.

We provide a welcome pack including homemade and local produce:
A loaf of Steve’s home made bread
Fresh butter
Fresh milk
Home made cake
Home made preserves
Home made granola with fruit and nuts

We have mentioned a potential for noise. We are located on the Mach Loop, a low-flying training area for the RAF and other air forces, which has a world-wide fanclub! There are some spectacular sights of jets and other planes passing down the valley on some days. They do not fly at weekends or Bank Holidays, but otherwise, flying days cannot be predicted. On most days, there are no flights at all. Flights are not continuous and the number of planes passing cannot be predicted. Most of our guests have really loved the sight of the passing planes, but we feel we need to make you aware of them in case you would not enjoy this.

Aberangell, Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο

Isfryn is on the southern border of the Snowdonia National Park in the village of Aberangell, right in the heart of the Dyfi Valley in beautiful Mid Wales. ‘Aberangell’ translates as ‘The mouth of the Angel’ and the village is where the River Angell merges with the Dyfi.

UNESCO awarded the Dyfi Valley Biosphere Status in 2009 in recognition of the unique and wonderful combination of its environment, wildlife, people, language, history and culture.

Five minutes’ drive away and just up the hill from the Brigands Inn is the local garage, shop and cafe. It stocks many of the essentials such as newspapers, bread, milk, a range of canned, chilled, frozen and household goods as well as confectionery. It is also licensed. If you’d like someone else to be responsible for your breakfast, they serve the full monty and a range of other foods and drinks at the adjoining cafe all day.

About six minutes' drive along the A470 towards Machynlleth in the village of Cemaes is the wonderful Ty Cemaes. This is a village shop and coffee shop selling fresh local produce, fresh milk, bread and cakes from the local bakery, eco friendly cleaning products and canned and frozen goods.

For more substantial stocking up, Machynlleth (10 miles) has two large Co-Ops and a small Spar, plus a range of other shops including two bakeries, and the Wednesday street market is great for for fresh produce and baked goods. In the opposite direction, Dolgellau (12 miles) has a reasonably large Co-Op and a large EuroSpar as well as lots of local shops and cafes.

It is the perfect area for anyone who enjoys the outdoors, with the beautiful Aran and Cambrian Mountains just down the road, and Pumlumon and Cadair Idris within easy reach. The spectacular high peaks of Northern Snowdonia are just an hour’s drive away. There are walks that you can take straight out of the door, or if you’d like some guidance in exploring nearby or further afield, Steve works as a qualified Mountain Leader and you can book him to take you out on guided walks that suit your wishes and stamina levels! He's also put guides to very local walks and drives in the cottage.

If you love bird watching, there is plenty to see in this area, with Red Kites and Buzzards frequently seen overhead and a multitude of smaller birds. The RSPB Nature Reserve of Ynys Hir is less than half an hour away and the award-winning Dyfi Osprey Project is just twenty minutes down the road. You can watch the spectacular feeding of Red Kite at Bwlch Nant yr Arian about an hour's drive away and the site offers walking and biking trails too. If you fancy getting away from it all try visiting Glaslyn reserve. There is a huge variety of wildlife in the area.

There is a great choice of stunning walks out of the door or a short drive away from Isfryn. Cadair Idris, at 893m, is the most well known of the local mountains, about 25 minutes’ drive away. Spend the night on the summit, and it's said you'll come down ether as a poet or a madman! Less well known is the Aran range, which is actually slightly taller than Cadair; an ascent of Aran Fawddwy or a traverse of the entire Aran ridge from Cwm Cywarch (about 15 minutes drive away) is a fantastic day out and has the benefit of a great pub at beginning and end.

About 40 minutes North of Isfryn the Rhinogs are a little known gem of an area with a huge number of hills and waterfalls to explore and to the South is the Plynlimon range (or Pumlumon as we’d have it here). Snowdon itself is just an hour away.

Directly from the cottage there are options for anything from 5-20 minute pre-dinner strolls along the lane or up Pen y Clipiau to take in some views of the Dyfi valley, half day rambles beside the local rivers or exploring abandoned slate mines to full days out in the local hills. We’re also on the long-distance Dyfi Valley Way.

Isfryn is well supplied with walking guides and a local OS map which you’re welcome to borrow. We’re very happy to provide suggestions too.

Mountain biking is a favourite local pastime and there are miles of forest tracks in the hills behind Aberangell that you can access from our front door. The the famous Coed Y Brenin trails are within easy reach, as are the Machynlleth Bike trails. You are welcome to borrow some of our bikes and helmets for local rides.

For keen anglers, the Dyfi is famous for its salmon, brown trout and sea trout. Day tickets and season tickets are available.

For golfers, the website 100 Best Golf Courses in the World lists the historic and scenic courses available at Llandrindod Wells, Cradoc, Welshpool, Builth Wells and Machynlleth as the best in the region. There are also championship links courses at Borth, Harlech and Aberdovey.

If rock climbing is your passion Snowdonia is fantastic, or if you fancy giving it a try, Steve is a qualified instructor and can teach or accompany you or just recommend the best places nearby.

You can combine a break in the countryside with the thrill of the alps at the Llandudno Ski and Snowboard Centre, where you can ski, snowboard, toboggan and sno-tube to your heart’s content!

For lots more adventure ideas, see Show Me Wales

For those seeking a more chilled approach to life, the beaches in this area are beautiful. From the classic seaside towns of Aberdovey and Aberystwyth to the vast beach at Barmouth or the National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest that is Harlech beach, with its dunes overlooked by the fourteenth century castle, there is something to suit everyone’s taste and much to discover.

The market towns of Machynlleth and Dolgellau are both around 10 miles from Aberangell and both have much to offer. Machynlleth has a vibrant street market every Wednesday and is home to the national Museum of Modern Art, situated at Y Tabernacl and to the Owain Glyndwr Museum. Dolgellau is a quaint, stone town with the Afon Wnion river running through it. Both have a wide range of individual shops, cafes and pubs to discover as well as having supermarkets and pharmacies.

Only a short drive away from Aberangell, you will find the Corris Craft Centre offering 8 studios of locally made craft items as well as a Welsh food and drink shop, a café nd teh Dyfi Gin Distillery. The site is also home to King Arthur’s Labyrinth and the highly recommended Corris Mine Explorers. Let your excellent guide Mark take you on a fascinating tour of the vast slate mine that lies inside the Corris hills.

The world famous Centre for Alternative Technology can be found less than 30 minutes’ drive away.

To watch the world go by in relaxing style, take one of the Great Little Trains of Wales , many of which are within easy reach of Isfryn. The mainline Arriva train services also have many scenic routes and can be a lovely and relaxed way to access local attractions. You can download a guide to exploring by train and you’ll find some in Isfryn for your use too.

There is a variety of pubs within easy distances where you can relax and savour their very different characters.

The nearest pub is The Brigands Inn (named after the band of red haired brigands who terrorised this area in the 1500s), just 2.5 miles down the road in the tiny hamlet of Mallwyd.

Dinas Mawddwy is 3 miles away and boasts the Red Lion (Y Llew Coch in Welsh), where you can be sure of good, home cooked pub food and plenty of it!

Cemaes is the home of the Penrhos Arms and at Glantwymyn, you will find the Dovey Valley.

If you fancy a trip further off the beaten track, why not visit the Tafarn Dwynant at Ceinws for a mix of pub and art gallery.

For a welcome tea break from your exploring, try Ty Cemaes ( as mentioned earlier) or The Crafty Cafe in Dinas Mawddwy for light lunches, cakes and local crafts.

If you’re in Corris, call in at Idris Stores Café and shop for delicious treats or stop by for a pint at the Slaters Arms just up the street.

For the ultimate end to the evening on clear nights, you don’t have to travel far out of the villages to find velvet dark skies and catch stunning views of the stars before wandering home to sink into Isfryn’s comfy beds.

We're Steve and Linda...Having both taken redundancy from work (Steve from telecoms / IT and Linda from the voluntary sector) we decided it was time for a new adventure. We both love the outdoors - especially the mountains. Steve is a rock climber and Mountain Leader. Linda loves to walk and ride, so life in the beautiful Dyfi Valley, on the border of Snowdonia, was an irresistible prospect. We moved to the lovely little village of Aberangell in July 2015 to live in our converted chapel with attached former minister's cottage and spent the subsequent 8 months renovating it. We're now expert floor sanders, paint sprayers and decorators (though it must be said that, with a somewhat 'enthusiastic' technique, Linda ends up wearing as much paint as she applies to the walls!) We've had a very happy time doing the work alongside some very skilled professionals and are delighted that Isfryn, our lovely cottage, is now ready to be shared with guests, whether they're seeking a relaxing and tranquil escape or the thrill of adventures in the outdoors. We love this area, and giving other people the chance to share it is a real pleasure. When we're not enjoying being in beautiful Mid Wales, we love to travel and have seen quite a lot of the world between us. Rome is our very favourite city and the one we'd love to get to know well enough to think of it as 'our back yard'. We're working on it! At home, we spend as much time out in the hills or on the coast as we can manage to fit into surprisingly busy days. Like most people, we both love to read, go to the cinema, cook, enjoy a glass of wine and share good times with good friends. We're very happy folk and loving our life here!
