Ο χώρος
Torodes is just 90 minutes drive north from the Sydney CBD. The heritage-listed village of Catherine Hill Bay consists of less than 150 houses, and is one of the oldest communities in the Lake Macquarie area. Torodes was the original cottage hospital in the old town, and has been beautifully restored with all modern conveniences while retaining the retro character of years gone by. Full bed linen and bath towels are included in the booking price.

Catherine Hill Bay is in the Hunter Valley Region of NSW and has recently been recognised for its outstanding beauty in the book "101 Best Australian Beaches".

Across the road, the southern end of Catherine Hill Bay beach is patrolled from October to April. Recreational activities include swimming, surfing, fishing and coastal walks. The village is surrounded by National Parks and is a great base for bushwalking and bird watching. The beach across the road is dog friendly for the area north of the creek (which is 90% of the beach).

Torodes is a fantastic base for exploring the Hunter Valley Region, including the expansive waterways of Lake Macquarie (just minutes away), the thriving food and arts scene in Newcastle (35 minutes), and the Hunter Valley vineyards (1 hour).

Please read the house rules carefully before booking this property. Parties and functions are strictly prohibited.

Catherine Hill Bay, Νέα Νότια Ουαλία, Αυστραλία

HISTORY

The community of Catherine Hill Bay is the oldest existing hamlet in the Lake Macquarie area and takes its name from a schooner boat, which was wrecked in the bay during a storm in 1867.

The survivors noticed a large coal seam, seen to this day just south of the jetty in the cliff face, and soon after a mining settlement sprang up which continued to extract coal and ship it by collier to Newcastle until 2003. Remnants of that industry can still be seen, but mining operations have now ceased and rehabilitation of the workings and land is under way.

Torodes House was built over one hundred years ago by the mining company as a guest house for travelling workers. Later it became a cottage hospital for the village of Catherine Hill Bay. It is named after Nurse Torode, a doughy character who lived here and was for many years the village midwife, nurse and first call for medical assistance.

Many of the houses in the Heritage Precinct date from the earliest days of the village settlement and both street and land scapes remain pretty much as they were a hundred years ago.

LOCAL BEACHES

The southern end of Catherine Hill Bay beach is patrolled during the summer months and is an excellent swimming spot. The northern end, or Graveyard Beach (so named because it is close to the cemetery), is well-known for as one of Australia’s top surfing beaches but is unpatrolled.

Further to the south over the immediate headland is the more secluded Moonee Beach. This is a beautiful spot but is not patrolled and there are no facilities. You can get there by walking up Clarke St past the pub and down through the streets of the new CHB South development.

WALKING TRAILS

From and around the village are numerous coastal walks, bush tracks and fire trails which provide the opportunity for much exploring. Bushland and bushwalks commence 50 metres from the cottage. There are many kinds of wildlife to be discovered in the bush lands and among the isolated rain forest clumps, between the coast and the highway. The paths can be rough and uneven in places and sturdy bushwalking shoes are recommended. Following are a few suggested walks:

CATHO LOOKOUT WALK (3.6km, approx. 1hr return, moderate grade)

Walk north from the house along Flowers Drive and across the small creek bridge. Turn left into the flat clearing area and locate the track head going westward into the bushland. Follow this trail for 350m, then turn right on the connecting trail and walk up the hill for a further 400m. Then take the first turn right approaching the top of ridge. This will lead you along a ridgetop that continues back to Flowers Drive, where you can cross to the Catho Lookout and enjoy sweeping views of the coastline (great whale watching and popular hangliding spot). From the lookout you can walk further north, parallel to the coast, to the Catherine Hill Bay Cemetery at the far end of the beach. Return home via a walk along the beach.
NB – this bushwalk has some steep and/or gravelly sections. Sturdy walking shoes are required.

GHOSTIES BEACH WALK (to sea cave - approx 2hrs return, easy grade)

Walk south to Moonee Beach via the village streets or alternatively drive to the start of Moonee Beach access track in the new CHB South development. Walk south along Moonee Beach. At the southern end of the beach there is often a large ocean water lagoon that forms at high tide (suitable for swimming/snorkelling). Continue walking south beyond the dunes and flat topped ‘island’ to see Ghosties Reef, an excellent surfing location on large south swells. I call this south facing stretch of sand Caspers Beach. There are beautiful sea caves at the far end of Caspers Beach. NB - Cave access recommended at low tide only. Beware of rogue waves in the cave if seas are high.

MOONEE BEACH TRAIL

There is a longer walking trail south from Moonee Beach through the Munmorah State Conservation Area to Frazer Park Beach. Further information can be found here at the National Parks website.

NORTH TO CAVES BEACH (via Pinny Beach)

To the north of Catherine Hill Bay the coast is more rugged with large rock pools and inlets but offers no safe swimming areas until Caves Beach. Caves Beach derives its name from sea caves in the headland at the southern end of the beach. A return walk along a coastal path will take approximately 4 hours.

Alternatively, you can turn inland at Pinny Beach and walk across the Wallarah Peninsula to Murrays Beach on Lake Macquarie. See details at the Lake Mac Visitor website.

OTHER LEASURE ACTIVITIES

The area offers a wide variety of activities including horse riding, boating, fishing, kayaking, scuba diving, golf and Hunter Valley winery tours. There is a Visitor Information Centre in Swansea, located between the roundabout and Coles. Jetbuzz provides boat, SUP and kayak hire on nearby Lake Macquarie.

There is a regular yoga class held in the surf club across the road on Monday mornings at 9am.

Alternatively there are numerous classes held daily at the Yoga Place, Blacksmiths Beach.

There are a number of toys & games in the house for your enjoyment. Guests are welcome to use the surfcraft located on the back verandah and under the house, however please do not use the standup paddleboard located in the rafters of the carport.

SHOPPING

The closest shops to Catho are in Swansea, less than a 10 minute drive north on the highway, or the Woolworths Shopping Centre on the Pacific Highway at Lake Munmorah.

At Swansea you will find large Coles & Woolworths supermarkets, Banks, ATMs, Chemist, Greengrocer, Butcher, Newsagent, Liquor Store, Post Office, Video Store, Laundry, fast food outlets, café-deli and a fish Co-op. The latter is situated on the lakeshore and has excellent fresh lake & ocean produce.

The Woolworths Shopping Centre at Lake Munmorah is an excellent place to pick up provisions when travelling to Catherine Hill Bay from Sydney. Major shopping malls are located at Charlestown to the north and Westfield Tuggerah to the south (both are about 25 minutes away).

EATING OUT

The village pub, The Wallarah Hotel or “Catho Pub”, is located just five minutes walk from Torodes at the top of Clarke Street. The hotel general has a live band on Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons 3pm. It attracts a wide attendance and some colourful characters. The food quality & value is very reasonable.

The Coastal Haze Café is located on Montefiore Parkway, at the top of the hill near the new development. It is open from 7am to 2pm daily and serves a great range of food and drinks.

A few other recommendations that are within 10-15 minutes driving distance:

For a caffeine fix, we have a Nespresso machine at the house which takes standard pods. There’s a pop-up café in Catho called Coastal Haze on Montefiore Parkway, open from 7am-2pm daily. The Catho Pub serves coffee from 9am on weekends and 11am on weekdays. Alternatively there are numerous cafes 10 minutes away in Caves Beach and Swansea.

The city of Newcastle, 35 minutes to the north, has a thriving food and arts scene and is a great day trip if you are having a longer stay at Torodes.

Hi, I'm a keen surfer and I'm also passionate about sustainability. Work keeps me in Sydney most of the time, but I love to get out of the city on weekends. My favourite travel destinations for surfing are Indonesia, the Maldives and the NSW North Coast. My house has solar hot water, is totally water self sufficient with two water tanks, and all wastewater is treated onsite with a biocycle system. Lots more improvements still to come!
