This is our own historic home in the center of Bridgeton's vast, mostly Victorian historic district--largest in the state! We share it much like a traditional B&B, and are glad to accommodate a single guest or as many as 3 in a family group, providing complete overnight privacy in the one-flight-up 'Victorian' section and assuring a delicious breakfast at your preferred time of choice in the original 'farmhouse' section dining room in the morning. Come away for work and play!

Ο χώρος
We are set on a bluff above the Cohansey River, richly arrayed with handsome Victorian homes, just a few steps from Bridgeton's villagey downtown and well-endowed 1000-acre park (biking, running, kayaking, even the revered Cohanzick Zoo!), and not much more than a mile from the Rutgers Food innovation Center. The Millville Autosports Park and the Renaissance Arts Center, Levoy Theater and Wheaton Arts Glass Museum are only about 15-20 minutes east of us; the Bayshore Center at Bivalve about a half-hour to the south, Philly about 45' to an hour away, NYC & DC only 2 1/2 hours.
The house itself is historic--a sensitively updated nationally-registered 'house-tour' house whose older farmhouse-style kitchen/dining room section goes back to the 1820s. The more elegant additions are Victorian--1870 to 1900--and contain two BnB rooms on the second floor. PLEASE NOTE, however, that during the pandemic WE ARE LIMITING RENTAL TO THE LARGE MAIN BR ONLY--the room first pictured! Also that we have ALWAYS maintained guest privacy and safety by booking only ONE family or group at a time.
The spacious main bedroom (which looks out over West Commerce St, a County access road fairly quiet on weekends but with some street noise on weekday mornings) is totally private, retro in feel but with A/C and other amenities. It combines seclusion with easy one-flight access to the dining-room/kitchen for breakfast. Fitted with (among other elegant furnishings) an old-fashioned four-poster DOUBLE-bed (NOT a queen!), it has its own close-door, one-step-down, bright and spotless bathroom, recently-restyled with tiled floor and shower. The bedroom is big enough for a foldout bed (additional $25) or pack-n-play (additional $10), and there is another half-bath directly downstairs also available to guests.
Bridgeton and South Jersey offer lots to see, do, and have for breakfast! Food has in fact been central to life here for centuries, and brought a diversity of workers to surrounding factories, farms, rivers and bays, creating a rich weave of cultures and a dream-destination for farm-foodies, birders and antique-afficionados. Central or South American cooking and great pizza are local traditions, with some Southern and West-Indian eating worth trying if you like it hot. Despite restaurant changes in this difficult time, there's always something good to eat locally and we can probably guide you to it.
Bridgeton also boasts the first and oldest free African-American settlement in the US (Gouldtown) right within the city boundaries, plus a Lenni Lenape Indian reservation, The Bayshore Center at Bivalve will feed you the world's best oysters while regaling you with the glorious history of multi-racial, multi-ethnic shell- and sturgeon-fishing along the Delaware Bay.
Besides being a destination in itself, Bridgeton, on the South Jersey Scenic Byway, is gateway to the historic and scenic Bayshore and only about a 45-minute drive from some of the best Atlantic beaches in New Jersey. In fact, it is situated perfectly for those who like their cozy, cosmopolitan & comfort-driven privacy (and an immaculate room to stay in) at a better-than-beach-house rate and with a dash of cultural ambience, green views, big skies and bold sunsets.
PRICING REFLECTS SEASONAL CHANGES, so PLEASE do consult the calendar for higher/lower-priced periods.

Getting around
Downtown and park are in walking distance, as are the choicest sites of historic architecture in this large historic district.

Parking is off-street, in the driveway at the back of the house, which also functions as our main entrance via the back patio. Enter through our multi-purpose "slate room" into the connected kitchen/dining room areas . From there it's straight upstairs into the guest-bedroom section of the house. These are the spaces we tend to share, along with the spacious back yard. Take your pick of breakfast in the dining room or a bit more family style in our retro kitchen--or in ideal weather even on the back patio!
We're both tourism aficionados and love to offer advice on what to see, walking, biking, driving, boating--even kayaking!--as well as where to go and how to get there. (Sandy and Flavia have slightly differing versions!) Plus we love guest feedback, so don't hesitate to share your experiences.
Because this is our home, we're normally here when guests are, and like to make personal arrangements about the timing of your comings and goings.
More details in the "House Manual" section, if you book.

Άλλα στοιχεία που πρέπει να γνωρίζετε
Weekday mornings during the school year school buses will climb the West Commerce Street hill outside our front windows for a few minutes (September to June--not weekends, not holidays, not in the summer). Otherwise it's amazingly quiet here (our guests tell us), and because we're so high above the road with the park virtually at our back, we're also quite sheltered for a house on a principal secondary road at the edge of the downtown. PLUS we're a block away from Route 49 with access to all of the South Jersey "Bayshore" and its extraordinary ecotourism amenities as well as every delight from the Delaware Bridge to the glorious Jersey beaches (stay here, save a LOT of money!). If you like boating or biking or birding, this is the 'gateway'! Satellite maps will show the parks, lakes and river bluffs virtually next door. (More about the area in the Description section.)

Bridgeton, New Jersey, Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες

Even overnights sometimes include some down-time, so we are happy to accommodate those looking either for interesting ambience OR needing a quick and practical in/out.
If you're a medical professional working or interviewing in Vineland Hospital, it's only 20 minutes away. So is Millville's Motorsports Park. We're only a block from the County Court House in the heart of Bridgeton's historic district, the largest in the state, and a mile from the Rutgers Food Innovation Center. Our own historic house sits on a high bluff above the Cohansey Riverfront, just a few steps from the bridge Bridgeton was named for over 300 years ago. The river, City Park, zoo and amazing (and under-appreciated) Bayshore landscapes of Down Jersey offer many choices of eco- and agri-tourism as well as historic field trips.
Nature still rules in the Cumberland County region. Birdwatching is unbelievable--starting with eagles and on down. Horseriding, canoeing, kayaking (even a sheep farm) are nearby. The Atlantic Jersey Shore beaches (including Cape May) are about an hour away. Take your pick of scenic natural resources: massive parks and protected watersheds, historic river and bayside villages, landscaping nurseries, farms and farmstands, arts and crafts, antiquing, festivals and public events, including the annual Japanese Obon Festival (bet you didn't know there'd been a a Japanese community here since the mid-20th century!).
Here in Bridgeton we're surrounded by big Federal/Victorian/Edwardian Arts/Crafts-style homes and public buildings in the West Side and Courthouse districts. (We're in the heart of the annual Bridgeton Historic Holiday House Tour in December... just use that phrase for internet look-up) . Two nearby public murals by Philly Mural Project artist Cesar Viveros-Herrera, a muralist in the great Mexican tradition, celebrate farming and industrial history. And we're more widely surrounded by some of the most interesting historic settlements in the Northeast--tribal home of the Lenni Lenape Indians, places where Swedes, Finns, Dutch, English and more have passed or settled going back to the 1600s, and what is considered the first settlement of free Blacks in the original colonies.
The past generation or two have brought hardworking Mexicans and their upwardly mobile children to the farms and nurseries, transforming Bridgeton into a bilingual city (at least bilingual; Asians and South Asians are other large minorities). We think we have some of the best Mexican restaurants in the region, two in walking distance: Las Palmas-- with a kind of funky ambience, bar and fantastic food (ask for Moses, and say we sent you) and La Cabaña, on East Commerce Street. Nearby are a couple of good pizzerias, one with sit-down service, and a Jamaican take-out restaurant. Drive about a mile to the Green Olive (privately-owned, NOT Olive Garden) with good "continental" style dining.
Back here at the Hann House, your hosts are Flavia (retired professor, writer and preservationist) and Sandy (collectibles specialist and man of many parts). We haven't wasted a minute of the ten years we've lived in South Jersey and know it better than some locals. And everybody knows us. Want fun? We know where to find it. Privacy? That too.

Me, I'm made of opposites--LOVE to travel and HAVE traveled (my bucket list stretches out of sight with places I've never been), but my favorite vacation is still "to go without leaving." Sure I love the life of the mind. But give me any combination of good food, color, love, babies, wine, company, a balmy day and a persimmon sunset, and the joy-ometer might just tickle "ecstasy." As for Sandy--think of him as hospitable, charming, witty, yet a lover of the earth and all things earthy, and add an encyclopedic memory and a genius for coins, cards, and other collectibles so on target that he's known as the emeritus professor of Stuff University. Ah, and then there's his talents for breakfast-making! It must be experienced--no one leaves our home without it!

We live here, and are available and on call as needed, but we try to assure a high degree of guest privacy too. Guests can breakfast in our spacious dining room or, if alone, can join the chef for that cozy in the kitchen feel! As you can tell from reviews, Sandy is a great (and entertaining) breakfast short-order chef--it was his profession for a time. We both love food. Expect us to talk about it at least a little! Flavia speaks Italian and manages in French and Spanish.
