"The Hideaway" is situated in Houghton, very close to the point at which the South Downs Way crosses the River Arun. The oak framed garden room offers studio style open plan living space with double bed, well equipped kitchenette & separate bathroom. The doors open onto a garden area to enjoy a spot of al fresco dining or simply just to soak up the sun & offer beautiful panoramic views of the South Downs. Houghton is also a mid-way point on the South Downs Way making it the perfect stop over
Located 300 metres from the South Downs Way, the 17sqm studio sleeps 2 very comfortably on a double bed on the ground floor. There is also a mezzanine bunk area accessed via a ladder (restricted headroom) with 2 single floor mattresses so the space would suit couples, 2 nimble friends or even a family with one or 2 small children (albeit at a squeeze!). Please let us know your sleeping configuration preferences at the time of booking. The kitchenette provides a sink, fridge/freezer box, kettle, toaster, microwave and induction hob. A light breakfast of cereals, bread, butter, jams, tea, coffee and milk is provided but if you have any specific requirements upon arrival we will be more than happy to accommodate your request. The bathroom comprises a WC, sink and shower which is stocked with shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, towels, hair dryer and mirror allowing for light travelling (essential for you hikers and cyclists out there!). The studio also offers free Wi-Fi access, freesat TV/DVD player and Alexa-enabled Bluetooth speaker with free access to Spotify digital music service. The area benefits from very good mobile reception. Also within walking distance is Amberley Railway Station, two lovely pubs (The Bridge Inn and the George & Dragon) both serving lunch and dinner and a riverside café that caters for breakfast, teas, lunch, pizzas and more recently self-hire river cruises. The George & Dragon, Houghton offers breathtaking views of the South Downs and is reputedly one of the oldest 3 pubs in Sussex. It has a wealth of charm & character and said to have been a stop-off point for King Charles II following his defeat at the Battle of Worcester. The nearby, picturesque village of Amberley with its pretty thatched cottages has a tea rooms, village stores (useful for lunch supplies) and a further two pubs! During the colder months the South Downs can get rather muddy in places so if you intend to explore the area we would highly recommend bringing suitable footwear. A unique attraction of the area is its International Dark Sky Reserve status making our location the ideal place for a spot of stargazing (on a clear night, of course!). Dark Skies are areas where you can look at the night sky without the light pollution created by street lights etc. so if you are checking in at night the drive and garden lights are on a sensor but the surrounding area will be dark, very dark! For those walking or cycling the South Downs Way we can provide a baggage transfer service up to 20 miles in an Easterly or Westerly direction for a set fee of £20. Please enquire at the time of booking. If you fancy exploring the South Downs on two wheels, never has it been so easy thanks to the introduction of e-bikes! Chalkpit Trails Mobile Cycle Hire offer a free drop off and collection service from The Hideaway supplying e-bikes and regular mountain bikes. Arundel, Chichester and Petworth are all within easy driving distance. Perfectly located for Goodwood events such as the Festival of Speed, Revival and Glorious Goodwood.
A stunning area of West Sussex. Houghton is a hamlet in the South Downs National Park making it perfect for hikers and cyclists keen to complete the breath-taking 100 mile stretch of national trail running from Winchester to Eastbourne. It is on the River Arun, where it has a bridge to a rural part of Amberley, 3 miles (5 km) north of Arundel. The Monarch’s Way long-distance footpath (which follows Charles's supposed route from Worcester to Shoreham-by-Sea) descends from the Downs to the west into the village, before heading south along the river towards Arundel. In May 2016 the South Downs National Park became the world’s newest International Dark Sky Reserve, only the 2nd in England and 12th in the world! Across the South Downs International Dark Sky Reserve, some of the best locations for stargazing are already designated as Dark Skies Discovery Sites, offering sweeping views of the starry skies. One of the darkest locations in the South Downs International Dark Sky Reserve is at Bignor Hill (3.5 miles from The Hideaway) between Arundel and Petworth. This remote hilltop location offers extensive views of the night sky in all directions and delivers exquisite views of the Milky Way on a moonless night in late summer and mid-winter.

Sitting right at the foot of the South Downs, this cottage is spacious, bright, clean & airy. Stunning views surround this tranquil W.Sussex village with easy access to Cowdray Polo, Goodwood, West Wittering & of course The South Downs Way. A vast selection of pubs & restaurants can be found within easy reach, not forgetting The Park House Hotel with its luxurious Spa facilities - too tempting! Bicycles, cots, board games, camp fires and even supper can be provided. Just ask!
This cottage is fresh clean and bright although certainly rustic. If you are wanting extreme modern then don’t come here! The two bedrooms are located upstairs and the sitting room, dining room kitchen and bathroom are downstairs. Please note that the bathroom is rustic with the actual bath being mini size so definitely does not cater for a long soak! The cottage itself is situated in the drive to our family home. So although not totally isolated, it’s a beautiful spot and we definitely don’t have any neighbours! There are many walks from the back door including being able to get to he top of the South Downs / South Downs Way in just 30 minutes. A steep walk up and you feel as though you are on top of the world! If you are wanting to BBQ or just dine Alfresco style we can give you access to our Orchard which will feel private and peaceful. Please ask in advance to borrow our BBQ and wood burners. There is lots to forage nearby subject to the correct season; blackberries, Sloes, nettles, Elderflower etc. Let me know if this is of interest and I can point you in the right direction. Similarly, you are welcome to collect fresh eggs from our chickens in the morning and help yourself to our apple, plum and pear trees which produce mid Summer.
Midhurst is the nearest town which is host to an array of restaurants, pubs, shops and general tinkering! Cowdray Farm Shop and cafe is great for brunch and local produce. On a Tuesday and Friday you can even get local fresh fish which is second to none. But be warned none of the above is cheap! Durleighmarsh Farm is an excellent seasonal pick your own. Wander through the strawberry fields, blueberry bushes and raspberry bushes collecting produce as you go. If that isn’t enough there is a cafe on site too. Don’t miss out on the fairy door which is enough to capture every child’s imagination! Petworth Park is great for easy walking and scenic views. Easy for little legs and a duck pond to add interest. Try climbing to the top of the hill and rolling down! Petworth itself has an array of Antique shops, cafes so good for general pottering. West Wittering - THE best beach in the world! A little less local but worth the trip rain or shine. Peak season traffic can be dodgy so leave early before the crowds hit! Take a picnic in the Summer or low season venture to Billy’s Cafe in Bracklesham Bay. Remember, blustery walks can be better than hot days in the sun!

'Maggie's Hut' is a cosy shepherd's hut set in a beautiful garden. It has a comfortable double bed and a woodburning stove for colder winter nights. The Swan Inn, (currently open!) a family run 15th century pub is a short stroll away. Perfectly located for the South Downs National Park. Also near Goodwood for its famous Festival of Speed and Revival and for exploring Chichester, Petworth & Arundel. Separate outdoor hot shower (**see note below) and 'Eco' composting loo are adjacent to the hut.
If you want to get away from it all, unwind, switch off and relax, Maggie's Hut is the perfect venue. Our bijou and perfectly formed hideaway is set within a pretty garden in the downland village of Fittleworth. It is within a short stroll (literally 2 minutes!) of the fantastic Swan Inn, which serves fine ales and delicious home-cooked food. (Do check their website for opening times as it alters opening hours in winter). There are other good pubs within a short drive or a good walk. The hut is extremely cosy and warm in the winter whilst also managing to stay cool at the height of the summer, shaded by the surrounding trees. There is a very comfortable double bed with crisp cotton sheets, a cosy duvet, pillows and fluffy sheepskins. 'The Bamboo Loo' is a separate outdoor 'eco' composting toilet adjacent to the hut. There is a private outdoor gas shower with instant hot running water. Showering outside is a unique and special experience and even in the colder months our guests enthuse about it! We provide towels, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. Bathrobes are also provided. *** In winter, when the temperature drops below zero, we may have to drain the shower to prevent burst pipes etc. This means the shower isn't usable, but hopefully only temporarily. Once the temperature rises we will turn it back on again *** The hut has a small wood-burner. We will give you enough kindling and logs to keep a cosy fire going for those cooler nights and mornings. There is all you need to make cups of tea (herbal teas are also provided) or enjoy a cup of our own delicious ground coffee, 'Maggie's Hut Blend', which has been especially created for us by our next door neighbours at The Honeybee Coffee Roastery (a decaffeinated blend is available on request, in advance). You will find wine glasses, tumblers, plates, bowls, mugs and cutlery. There is a mini fridge, kettle and a toaster. Breakfast cereals are provided and you will find milk and water in the fridge. If you would like our special breakfast basket delivered to your door in the morning, containing warm croissants, fresh bread, butter, jams, yoghurt and fresh orange juice, ** please enquire/ request at time of booking as sometimes this is not available ** (an extra £7.50 per person per morning is payable for this). Hopefully the weather will be good enough for you to eat outside but if not, there is a fold-down table and chairs within the hut. Maggie's Hut also has mains electric and two double power sockets. Secure parking available in our private driveway. There is also undercover parking for an open top car or motorbikes. The recently opened 'Fittleworth Village Stores and Cafe' is about a 10 minute walk away. * It has a wide variety of produce, much of which is local. It also has a lovely café serving breakfast, snacks and light lunches. You can also buy alcohol, newspapers and it has a post office where you can withdraw cash. * revised opening times (mornings only) due to Coronavirus, cafe is currently closed. Food deliveries available.
There is plenty to do and see in the area, and something for everyone. There are some lovely walks straight from the front door, and slightly further afield lie the beautiful South Downs with the well known walkway and many other beautiful routes. Fittleworth itself sits within the South Downs National Park and boasts two commons. We have Hesworth Common, which is just a 5 minute walk from the Hut and is an Area of Natural Outstanding Beauty. If you walk to the trig point at the top you will be rewarded with beautiful far reaching views to the Downs. Fittleworth Common is a 10 minute walk away and is smaller and quieter (known mainly to the 'locals') than Hesworth but also has lovely views and a collection of unusual trees. The Lord's Piece at Coates Common (2 miles): A beautiful piece of parkland which looks like a piece of the New Forest that has been transported to West Sussex. The historic towns of Petworth, Arundel and Chichester are all within striking distance. We are also conveniently located for Goodwood with its very popular Festival of Speed and Revival Meeting. You might like to hire bikes from 'Chalkpit Trails' based in Amberley. They have a good selection of mountain bikes and E- bikes and can advise on routes. Other places of interest: Petworth House and Park (3.7 miles): Magnificent National Trust House set in a beautiful 700 acre deer park landscaped by 'Capability' Brown and immortalized in Turner's paintings. The nearby town of Petworth is worth a visit too for a mooch about the shops (there are an abundance of antique shops), and there are a variety of good places to eat and drink. Amberley (6.2 miles): is one of the most attractive of all downland villages. It has a lovely setting; on the east side there is the scarp slope of the Downs, rising up to Amberley Mount with a steep climb up to the South Downs Way . On the south and west sides of Amberley there's the atmospheric River Arun and the wild brooks. The village has its own Castle, and although it's in use as a hotel and wedding venue rather than a good old-fashioned historic monument the castle is extremely atmospheric. Non-guests of the hotel can walk around the back of the Amberley Castle on their way into Amberley Swamp. The recently renovated pub 'The Black Horse' is very popular and worth a visit. Amberley Wildbrooks Nature reserve (3.6 miles): A great haven for birdlife in winter. Amberley Working Museum (5.4 miles):This is an interesting use of an old chalk pit above the railway station - it's now home to a treasure horde of old agricultural and industrial machinery, nearly all of it still functioning. Arundel Castle (8 miles): Founded at the end of the 11th Century, it has been the family home of the Dukes of Norfolk and their ancestors for nearly 1000 years. Set high on a hill in West Sussex, this great Castle commands the landscape with magnificent views across the South Downs and the River Arun. The town of Arundel is also worth exploring with a wide variety of interesting independent shops and eateries. Parham House and Gardens (5.8 miles): (please note it is closed during the winter months, re-opening on Easter Sunday 2019) Parham is one of the country’s finest Elizabethan Houses, complete with a Great Hall and Long Gallery. The Gardens consist of beautiful Pleasure Grounds and a four-acre Walled Garden. There are stunning herbaceous borders, a glasshouse, vegetable garden, orchard and a 1920s Wendy House. They featured in The Guardian’s “10 best gardens to visit this summer” The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum (14.7 miles): Historic houses and agricultural buildings dating from the 13th century to Victorian times, rescued from destruction and rebuilt in a magnificent parkland setting. West Dean Gardens (15.6 miles): Nestled at the foot of the South Downs, West Dean is one of the greatest restored gardens open to the public today. Visitors can explore a wide range of features from surreal trees to the restored walled garden. Goodwood: House, Hotel, Race Course, Motor Circuit and Aerodrome all within approximately 15 miles of Maggie's Hut and are worth a visit. The Aero Club cafe is open to the public and very close to the airfield and motor circuit so you can watch the comings and goings. Cass Sculpture Foundation (12.1 miles): Visitors are welcome to explore the tranquil 26-acre site, which contain over 50 large-scale, contemporary sculptures and two indoor gallery spaces. The organisation commissions new works and curates dynamic exhibitions every year, featuring some of the most exciting artists working in sculpture today, all within a beautiful country setting. Vineyards: If wine is your thing.... we are lucky enough to have several Vineyards very close by. Most offer visits and tours (seasonal April/May to October) but DO CHECK WEBSITES for opening times and availability as some are more limited than others and often get booked up quickly! Welcoming, charming cottage on the South Downs way near Amberley. Professionally cleaned after each guest departure. Just round the corner from Amberley station and the Museum, this cosy cottage boasts a welcoming kitchen and lounge and through to the main bedroom with king size bed and ensuite with shower. Upstairs, with limited head height is a second small double bedroom with adjoining bathroom. The cottage is in a perfect position, mid point on the south downs way.
The cottage is on the South Downs way and a 2 minute walk from Amberley Train station (and don't forget Amberley Museum aka Roger Moore 007 film location). It has the convenience of an excellent pub over the road, where you can get a swift drink and good quality food (in high season you will need to book in advance) or a delightful riverside tea room round the corner. The cottage backs onto the main road through Amberley, and whilst it is double glazed, you can hear the traffic. In the kitchen there is a belfast sink, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, kettle, toaster, microwave, combination oven and ceramic hob. Please let me know if you want me to leave the travel cot at the time of booking. In the main bedroom there is a king size bed with wardrobes, shelves and an ensuite with toilet, shower and basin. In the other bedroom please note, there is limited head height. There are 2 single beds in there. But let me know if you only want 1 single bed in there and I will remove 1 of them so that there is more space. In this bedroom there is a bath and basin. Please note, the bath is super tiny. Really tiny. Please also note that the house owner (not me) is currently clearing out the house and there is currently a container on the parking lot. However there are still 4 other parking spaces available. The cottage also offers free Wi-Fi access and a TV and dvd player. The local towns and villages of Arundel, Chichester and Petworth are all within easy driving distance. Often, travellers stay with us to attend Goodwood events such as the Festival of Speed, Revival and Glorious Goodwood (Horse Racing).
This cottage has great transport links with Amberley train station a couple of minutes walk away. There is ample parking on the premises.

Our Church is beautiful !! 11th Century Picturesque and interesting to visit and explore the history The Grade I listed church of St. John the Baptist is built of local sandstone and roofed with Horsham stone slabs.[3] Herringbone masonry and the style of column capitals indicate that the nave is early twelfth century.[4] The north aisle is thirteenth century and the tower fifteenth. The tower carries a peel of six bells and a clock. There are four stained glass windows by Charles Eamer Kempe.[ The HalfMoon pub(Jodie Kidd) in the village is a lovely pub Our village shop is well stocked and well known for delicious fresh organic ice creams and fish and Chips on a Thursday In 2011, Kirdford Village Stores won 'Best Corner Shop' in the Telegraph's Best Small Shops in Britain Awards.
