Red cinder leads you through the dense jungle to your secluded bamboo treehouse. Nestled on top of stilts 15' up in the canopy of the local flora, ascend to your retreat via the trapdoor or begin your adventure in Volcano National Park 10 miles away.
Upon arrival, let the red cinder path be your yellow brick road as you are lead through the jungle to your personal paradise. At ground level you will encounter a hanging bed, suspended beneath the floor of your new living quarters. Stop and relax or continue up the staircase to the trapdoor. It is through this trapdoor that you are allowed access to the lanai amongst the canopy of trees. A beautiful wrap around lanai allows for a 360 degree view of the lush jungle, while two sliding glass doors grant access to the bedroom. Upon entering, you will notice that the generous windows and doors allow for natural sunlight to flood into the house, complementing the bamboo fixtures and vintage 1970s wallpaper that backs the bed. The white bed linens reflect the light giving a dreamy, cloud-like aura to the space. There is counter stocked with a local coffee and snacks nestled into a corner of the house and overlooked by the handcrafted porthole windows. Bamboo backed cubby holes and hangers furnish the wall behind you and create an elegant, minimalist closet space for you to store your personal items for the duration of your stay. Just past the closet is a sliding door that accesses one of the most fun areas of the house: the bathroom. The bathroom jalousie windows stretch from the floor to the ceiling and the horizontal glass plates open up, creating an indoor-outdoor effect. Naturally caught rainwater cascades from the large shower head above before disappearing into the floor boards below. You'll notice that the natural theme spills over into the bathroom with sustainable cork board backing the shower and air plants intermittently growing throughout. The toilet and hand-made rock sink in the corner make use of grey water eco-principles by allowing you to wash your hands with fresh water before it goes on to fill the bowl. One of the most fun aspects of this property is that it allows you the opportunity to experience true off-grid living without sacrificing any of the comforts of normal life. Natural lighting, solar power and rain water catchment are the three principles that have been integrated into this tree top design, making it almost like a living organism itself. The beauty of this high flying haven is in the details. I spent the better part of three months personally constructing the building as well as the accessories inside. My goal was to create a customized and secluded space for your occasion. The chandelier, hanging lights, port-hole windows, rock sink and platform bed were all DIY projects that I specifically created to enhance your experience. The bamboo pillars that 'support' the lanai and the moss carpet under the hanging bed were harvested from local areas on the Big Island. IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE MAKING A RESERVATION Don't worry, the capital letters are just to emphasize importance. I'm not mad at you. But please read this entire section before making a reservation. As lush and inviting as the Dreamy Tropical Treehouse is, there are inevitable 'challenges' that come with staying in an off-grid treehouse in the Hawaiian jungle. My goal is to give you an experience that combines adventure and luxury so I want to make sure that you are aware of the following things: 1. The treehouse is about 15-feet off the ground and is only accessible by the 'ladder-stairs'. 'Ladder-stairs' is just another way of saying 'very steep' stairs. There is a hand railing and none of my visitors have ever had a problem going up and down. There is a pulley system for hoisting up your bags. Only those who believe they are physically capable should book a stay. Just remember to go up and down the stairs facing them... like a ladder! 2. The running water comes from the rain falling on the roof and is not treated; therefore, the water is not potable. I will provide several bottles of drinking water. 3. The electricity you use is generated by sunlight and is stored in a battery. Once the battery runs out of power it has to recharge. This shouldn’t happen but just be mindful not to leave lights or power hungry items running for extended periods of time (No hairdryers). The windows allow for plenty of light during the day. 4. This is the rainy side of the Big Island so expect some showers! Realize that the pitter-patter on the roof is the rain's first stop on its journey to the water tanks and then to your shower. Also notice how warm it is. Don't think of rain as a trip ruiner but instead an asset to be enjoyed! 5. There are bugs but this isn't the Amazon. For such a tropical climate you will be surprised at how few bugs there are. The main things you will see are moths, fruit flies (due to fruit falling off of the trees) and mosquitoes. Bug repellent is provided but it never hurts to bring your own. They really don't get that bad but their presence increases after a hard rain and during the twilight hours. Luckily, the hanging bed has mosquito netting that drapes down to encompass it. 6. Noises. Living off-grid in the jungle also brings about its own set of noises. The water pump and solar inverter will make soft noises throughout the day as they are used. The falling fruit from the vivie trees can also be alarming if you don't know what it is, and at night you are going to be serenaded by the sweet chirping of coqui frogs. Rustling branches, grunts and squeals typically means that the cute family of wild pigs is nearby. They are harmless and will runoff as soon as they sense your presence. Quietly grab the binoculars and, if you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of them! All of these aspects are what makes this place so unique and, with the right mindset, they’ll only enhance your overall experience. Guests have free range to fully utilize every aspect of the house. The hanging bed, wrap-around porch, indoor-outdoor shower and closet are at your full disposal. I have recently installed a kitchenette that has a sink, cooler for storing food/drinks, and a coffee maker (also capable of heating up water). Any and all goodies stocked in the house are there for your enjoyment. Here is a more comprehensive list of amenities and features that will be available to you: •Indoor/Outdoor Shower •Toilet with Overlaid Sink •Organic Shampoo/Conditioner •Towels •Ample Parking •Tiki Torch ‘Flashlights’ •Hanging Bed •Table and Chairs for Lanai •Binoculars •Several Books •Outlets (3-prong and USB) •Kitchen Sink •Coffee Maker •Clean Linens •Gramophone Music Player for iPhones •Cooler for Food/Drink •Card Game Guest interaction can be tailored to your needs. My goal is to make sure your stay is unforgettable so you can always contact me via phone or email. Because I do not live on the island year round, a local neighbor can assist you if you have any problems that need tending to. Upon your arrival I can arrange to have someone greet you and show you the property or simply stow away the key for your convenience. The choice, of course, is yours. Even though I am not on site, I can always be reached. Feel free to call/text/email me at any time during your stay should the unlikely event that a problem arises. I will immediately contact the proper authority to have the problem remedied. The treehouse is located at the end of a neighborhood street making it very private. It is set about 50 yards off the street behind a windy, jungle path further adding to your privacy. There are only about five full time neighbors scattered throughout the neighborhood so don't expect to see a lot of people. The treehouse is about 20 miles from Hilo, 23 miles from Pahoa, 12 miles from Keaau and 8 miles from Volcano. Volcano is the closest place for laundry, good restaurants and groceries, though you will pay a little more for the groceries than in Hilo or Keaau. I recommend you stop on your way in from Hilo. When you book I will include a guidebook that has the locations, hours and prices of local restaurants and grocery stores. There is quick access to highway 11 and it is 10 miles from Volcanoes National Park. Numerous opportunities for sightseeing and adventures are within a 40 minute drive of this treehouse paradise and they will be included in my guest guidebook as well. This is the ultimate spot for couples seeking romantic seclusion in the middle of a tropical jungle or individuals who want to escape the world. Unless you feel like hitchhiking, you will definitely need a rental car with high ground clearance to comfortably explore the surrounding areas and access the treehouse. While nothing is 'far' on the big island, everything is just a bit out of reach by foot... except of course for those lovely, yet dense, jungle strolls.

Due to emergency proclamation we are unable to take any reservations at this time. We believe that the COVID 19 emergency will be resolved by the cooperation of influencers, visionaries, and scientists dedicated to our well being, and that this will happen in the near future. Check back ! TA-020-255-1296-01
This is a custom designed treehouse, built by the same crew you see in Treehouse Masters on TV. The Jurassic attitude of the rainforest is preserved on the grounds. We also have a wedding venue nearby you may view in the photos. Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park borders the end of the street but can be accessed only through the main gate about two miles away. *** 2019 notes: There is no surface lava at this time. Our air quality is now some of the best anywhere. There are scant emissions from the volcano. Steam comes out of the ground, signs of the hot magma below. The steam is not VOG. There is currently no eruption. There are no signs an eruption is coming, or restarting. Volcanoes are unpredictable but they do give signs before going into action. Those signs typically are increased seismicity over a period of weeks and months, and sometimes years. No signs currently. The changes in the park due to the last eruption cannot be shown other than in imax format- they are that enormous. This is an excellent time to visit. Notes regarding cancellation and changes: please read the policy as published. Airbnb writes the policies and all of us must adhere to them. If you are feeling a need to cancel, you may wish to reconsider and change dates instead or discuss all options with us directly before deleting your reservation. Mahinui Na Lani hangs in ohia trees growing over a lava tube in the rainforest that extends into Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The treehouse was conceived as a companion to our rainforest pavilion, a Bali style structure a couple of blocks away, intended as an intimate wedding venue. Both may be reserved, and there are a couple of photos of the pavilion included in this series. The treehouse is accessed via a path that is about 100 meandering feet in the forest, lava boulders set into the side of the lava tube, and ladders. The ascent is somewhat steep once you reach the lava rocks. For your safety and comfort, we provide day packs to transfer whatever clothing is needed for your stay from your luggage into the abode. There is a special recessed corner dedicated to your stuff, with hooks for clothes, and a couple of night stands with drawers that can hold less bulky items. It's Hawaii, and the climate is mild, the atmosphere everywhere very casual. We also provide bathrobes. The treehouse itself is built on two levels, connected via a ship's ladder. The main level includes the living room, with two chairs and an ottoman, flat screen for viewing films & playing CDs, built in indoor window table & stools, small kitchen, outdoor shower, and composting toilet & vanity. The indoor fireplace is a Jotul propane stove vented to the outside. Outdoors on the lanai there is a cedar hot tub, and a teak table and chairs for al fresco dining in the trees. The upper level is also upper canopy, with birds actually flying around beneath you sometimes. There is a queen sized bed with a memory foam mattress, the tiny "closet corner" and another lanai. The windows other than the french doors onto the lanai are stained glass, made by a local artist. There is no kitchen. There are plates and utensils so you can bring in take out and enjoy your meal either indoors or outdoors in solitude. There is a sink so your plates and utensils may be cleaned. You can make hot beverages. There is a French press and a tea pot. We encourage you to enjoy the nearby restaurants and recognize the treehouse experience is not a cooking experience. This is not by our choice but a change we are forced to make to comply with anti-vacation rental legislation on our island. We are unable to know precisely what restaurants are offering take out but at this writing Kilauea Lodge does so, and the Thai food truck seems still to be operational. We invite you to consult Experience Volcano for up to date notices about meal services. The house was built primarily of recycled materials. The fir floors and redwood and cedar siding were once a church. This particular area is adjacent to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where Kilauea has been active for decades. If you are reserving in the near future, it is likely the park itself will be closed. There are however hiking trails outside the park, particularly on Mauna Loa. Please disregard the information in this notice as to places to go, for the duration of the restrictions on island. Please follow all laws as to keeping the effects of the virus to a minimum. There are hiking trails in and around the park through rainforest, desert, volcanic devastation, even a path with footprints preserved from an eruption over a hundred years ago. There are petroglyphs. Less than a mile from the treehouse there is Volcano Village, with restaurants and art galleries, a couple of places to buy gas. The entrance park itself is about two miles away. The neighborhood is rainforest, with many unbuilt upon lots. The reason there is no view of the treehouse through the forest is because the rainforest is very dense. There is the floor, very jungly with ginger, native ferns, and trees. Mid canopy are the tree ferns, some twenty feet tall, and over a hundred years old. The upper canopy is a mixture of ohia trees with red lehua flowers, Hawaiian holly, and others. We are asked from time to time if more than two people can stay in the treehouse. We can especially understand that families would like to bring their children to share this experience. The treehouse is a two person space. Everything is designed to be a honeymoon experience. While it is possible for more than two people to sit together and chat, only two can sleep over. There is no rollaway bed, nor is there room for one or for any other furniture beyond what is there already. Hall of Fame: The treehouse has been featured in Extreme Cribs, on episode 13. The Ellen Show: Kim Douglas's Tropical Vacation Ke Ola Magazine Volcano Tree House story in July - August 2011 edition Trip Advisor: One of the Ten Most Romantic Places to Stay (global selections) PureWow feature Treehouses of the World, Travel Channel European segment, by Treehouse Masters series Buzzfeed blogs and news articles published globally You will have access to the entire property, including the small structure below the treehouse near where you park your car. You may safely lock your luggage inside that room and use the day packs inside during your stay. If you use a CPAP machine, please contact us prior to making a reservation. There is only one treehouse on the property. We live nearby and come by regularly to maintain the treehouse. It is likely we will meet you on arrival. Otherwise, we are available by cell phone, text, email. When we are away, someone else who lives locally will be available to greet you and take care of your needs. The treehouse requires daily attention because it is off grid. This is generally done between 11 am and 4 pm, and most guests are away for that portion of the day. We do ask that if you are staying all day at the treehouse, that you communicate with us to let us know when one of us can come up and take care of the place. The neighborhood is mostly old growth rainforest with a few houses here and there. When you drive up, you will notice there are neighbors across the street and next door. You will forget about them once you walk through the moongate and enter the world of the treehouse. Sometimes of a late afternoon and evening you may hear a local hula halau practicing. We hope you find the sounds of laughter and Hawaiian language and music adds to the ambience. A rental car is a necessity. While there is public transportation, it is a long slow trip up the mountain. Uber and Lyft are available here, but the distances are such that renting a car tends to be more efficient. The park is a couple of miles down the road, and so large you will want to drive and not attempt to walk. Volcano Village is about a mile up the road. You might like to stroll up and back. If walking into the village for dinner, a flashlight for your return is an absolute must. We provide - please take it with you! If you are planning a first trip to our island, we suggest that you stay 2 or 3 nights at the treehouse. Please contact us for for discussion before you reserve if you wish. The island is truly big, and most people would rather spend the night on the west side of the island rather than return to Volcano after a day of play over there. Although we show rates for long term stays, we would like to discuss plans with you before completion of a stay of 5 days or longer. When you decide you want to stay at the treehouse, you are coming to a place unlike any other. There are other treehouses, but each is unique. This treehouse is off grid. This means it requires hands on service, every day. For most people, this is a seamless thing that happens while they are off adventuring. Every once in awhile, people come and do not want to leave, at all. We understand, but we do want to let you know that we must enter the treehouse on a daily basis to service the composting toilet. The hot tub also requires attention. The treehouse is in the forest. It is inside the trees, and this means easy critter access. To keep them outside, we carry your rubbish away and make sure your food is stored adequately. It is not a good idea to leave unwashed dishes for these same reasons. This is the tropics. There are insects. They are not as prolific here as at lower elevations, but they do exist, and will visit you especially at dusk with lights on. Spiders are residents of the forest. They are food for the birds. If you love the birds, please tolerate their food supply. We empty the house of spiders daily but we do not poison. The spiders come back at will. They are small, and stay in the corners. They leave evidence of their visit in the form of webs. We do our best to be inhospitable to them, but they persist. When there is weather, like hard rains and winds, from your perch in the trees you will experience the sound and feel in ways you may have not before. The house is tight - the weather does not enter if the doors and windows are closed. But the sounds can be formidable. You will feel close to nature.
The neighborhood is part undeveloped rainforest and part lots with houses. There are no tract homes - every house is individually designed and built. There are no street lights so at night it is very dark. The forest tends to obscure moonlight. There is a hula halau that practices nearby some afternoons, and you can hear their Hawaiian music and chants late in the day.

Mahalo !! Eco-friendly tree house in the Hawaiian rainforest on the Big Island. Only a few minutes away from a rare and spectacular glimpse of an active volcano! Enjoy an off grid adventure in the lush tropical settings of the city of Volcano. Come live in the canopy of Hawaii’s undisturbed ecosystem! This unique house is a beautiful and romantic nature getaway for couples as well as solo travelers. Come find peace and recharge your soul in paradise!
The Mokuna Treehouse is a completely off grid, eco-friendly home. The house is powered through solar energy and water comes from rain catchment. While being a one-bedroom studio, the house feels very spacious and well organized. The main living space is about fourteen feet from the ground. Covered, comfortable, wide sets of stairs with railings will lead you to your beautiful suite. The high setting gives you picturesque treetop views of the gorgeous and rare undisturbed Hawaiian rainforest, with it’s numerous Ohia trees with red flowers, Hapu’u ferns, and many more tropical plants. Sometimes you get lucky enough to see some exotic birds and small reptiles such as geckos and chameleons. At night, you can gaze at the stars and listen to the coqui frogs sing. We used a lot of natural materials throughout the house and it gives it a very warm and inviting feeling. The house has wood floors in the entire space, a modern concrete countertop, a small kitchenette area, a specious bathroom with a very large standing shower and a real toilet. The kitchen does not allow you to cook food, but there is a sink, a mini fridge, and a coffee maker. On the lanai, you will have access to a small propane grill to bbq any local delicacies. The ceilings are about 14 feet high at the peak and half of the gable roof is transparent and gives a lot of natural light. Some of the highlights of the house include the comfy king size bed and the enormous window within the shower that pans from top to bottom on one of the sides which gives you the feel that you are actually showering outdoors! There is a small lanai on the west side of the house where you can relax and enjoy great views of the rainforest and garden. Furthermore, there is a huge net that overhangs the main entrance of the home, underneath the main living space. It is such a fun lounging area where you can just relax, nap, and enjoy the surrounding forest. There are many different plant species all over the property. Enjoy a quaint stroll through the garden in the back as well as up and down the path to the main gate. So many things to see everywhere you look! We do not offer wifi and we highly encourage our guests to immerse themselves into a full nature retreat and detach themselves momentarily from technology and their portable devices while at the tree house. :)
The Mokuna Treehouse is situated on a quiet street with little traffic, only 2 minutes away from the main road that loops the island. The house is located in the town of Volcano, which is close to three thousand feet in elevation, so it does get a bit colder up in this area (temperatures sometimes dropping to the low fifties at night). The southeast part of the Big Island does tend to get a decent amount of rainfall, so it is normal that you encounter some showers at some point throughout the day. Although Volcano is a small town, you have access to everything you may need within just a few miles from the house. Volcano Village is only five to ten minutes away and has a couple of general stores, a coin laundry, a hardware store, a gas station, and several great restaurants and cafés. There are also a few art galleries and even a winery. Every Sunday there is also a farmer’s market held in Volcano Village where you can buy all sorts of local produce and much more. Volcanoes National Park is also extremely close, where you have access to a discount price gas station, a restaurant, several unique hiking trails, a view of the active volcano, and even a bowling alley! The park is open 24hrs, so you may enter at any time. The best time to see the active volcano is definitely after dark on a clear night. The closest airport near Volcano is in Hilo, which is about 40 minutes away. Kona also has an airport on the other side of the island, but it is about two hours away. The nearest beaches are about a forty minutes drive from Volcano. A favorite is the Black Sand Beach on the south portion of the island. The southeast part of the Island has so much to see. Definitely have a rental vehicle available to catch a glimpse of all the gems this side has to offer!

Our Tiny Tropical Treehouse is a very special space full of creativity and beauty. Custom built by an artist, this eco-house is flooded with natural sunlight, rich with wood accents, and inextricably connected to nature. It is ideal for couples and individuals looking for a private retreat nestled away in the jungle. Adventurers, relaxers, writers, and artists will enjoy staying here, a mere 18 mi from all Volcano National Park has to offer and 20 mi from downtown Hilo.
Tiny treehouse, swinging bridge, and zooming zipline... oh my! This rental is one of a kind. The house boasts an eco-friendly footprint to travelers, budding botanical garden, unique custom interior, and a getaway retreat from busy life. In 2016 Caroline and Melissa embarked upon building this off-grid house. With some serious planning, a hint of overconfidence, and a lot of support, we hit the ground running. At Home Depot we were serendipitously roped into an interview for HGTV's show "Tiny Paradise." The film crew showed up at our door a week later! From then the project took on a whole new energy. We embarked upon new murals, art projects, and all kinds of visual eye candy to make sure every corner of the house was the highest quality we could muster. We hope you enjoy the finished product and all the love and time that went into custom making every inch of this space! If you want to check out the episode we are episode #2 "Tiny Hawaiian Hideaway" in the HGTV series "Tiny Paradise." Below is a description of what you can expect when you visit: Follow the red cinder trail through the stunning botanical array that envelops our off-grid tiny house. Ascend 8 feet up into the air for the cool breeze and a better view of the surrounding flora and fauna. You've arrived! With a total of 13 windows and glass doors, you enter into the comfort and luxury of the home but your view extend hundreds of feet into the surrounding jungle of Ohia and Hapu'u. Once inside you will see dozens of wood accents, from our high-backed log chair, to our Koa Wood Balinese style couch. The loft is held up with posts made from Ohia trees sourced from our own property. We made the loft handrail, coffee table, and hand-towel hangers from trees that had to be cleared during the construction of our house. Enjoy lounging on the expansive Balinese couch while you bird watch, or kick your feet up onto the trunk as you become immersed in a good read. On your way to the kitchen meander past the stained glass window depicting a cardinal, we coincidentally have two males and one female on the property! Also keep an ear out for baby hawk in the early spring. You enter the kitchen and will be blown away by the design of the floating dish racks. The custom Chocolate Albezia wood slab counter top shimmers, as does the glass sink basin and hand blown pendant lights hanging overhead. Relax at the kitchen bar and sip on your morning coffee as you watch the sunrise strike leaves and dew, setting them off into stunning shades of green, red, orange, and yellow. Eat your lunch while pondering the tiny mushrooms and vibrant moss growing on a nearby tree. Drink a glass of wine while you stare at the milky way and the moon. Tucked away in a dark corner of the house is the lava themed bathroom. Enter the bathroom and feel the cool natural stone underneath your feet, be reminded of that lava tube you explored yesterday or will crawl around in today. The main volcanic mural, created with naturally smoothed lava rocks, will captivate your eyes as you shower. The fiery glass sink, with a rough field of lava swirling around it, is a focal point of the lava spilling into your lavatory experience. A local female artist made the themed art piece hanging on the wall; illustrating traditional canoes, hula, Pele (the volcano goddess) and ancient rituals. The sliding barn door and tinted openable window envelop you in the private surreal feel of the space. Enjoy! It's all yours! Before you head to bed you absolutely must make your way across the swinging bridge to arguably the best part of the house. The treehouse! Supported by two rows of sister trees, the deck is a magical place to lay down and look up at the sun shining through the leaves, get close to Lehua blossoms or a herd of blooming orchids, and watch the stars glittering through the branches. We enjoy eating every meal we can out there and doing work while lounging in the reclinable chair. If you're visiting with a romantic partner (eyebrow wiggle), there was a psychology study that found people misattribute the excitement of a swinging bridge to the attraction they feel for a potential love interest. So go on, get your partner on the bridge with you and spice things up. Get your heart beating faster... is it the bridge?... is it your partner? I guess we'll never know. When all the excitement has passed and you're all tuckered out, climb the space efficient right-left ladder staircase to the loft. Wiggle into the comfort and luxury of our memory foam mattress, feel it envelop your body, and then never get up ;). The loft is cozy, but it's a room with a view. Along the headboard a 10 inch window encourages you to stargaze from the comfort of your bed, at one of the clearest skies in the world! I personally love laying on my side staring out the openable window and looking at the silhouettes of the surrounding forest contrasted against the starry night sky. Under the warmth of the comforter enjoy the cool mountain breeze (1900 feet of elevation) as you drift off to sleep. What else can we say? This place is paradise and heaven on earth and our pride and joy. We hope you will love it as much as we do! ********************************************************** The "Eco" in our house: We hope you will love the artistic luxury of the space and re-define what is possible to create with reclaimed materials and an off-grid lifestyle. We built this house ourselves and one of our main goals was for guests to enjoy being off-grid and see first hand how lovely it can be to go green. We adore nature (if you couldn't tell ;) ) and so it was very important for us to have the smallest footprint possible throughout the building process, therefore we hunted, hunted and kept hunting! All 5 of the huge 4 ft x 6 ft windows connecting the interior space to the natural beauty found outside, were reclaimed. We scored on the 2 glass doors because Ace Hardware in Kea'au was de-installing them from their store front. We managed to give dying surfboards new life in our functional art piece on the treehouse deck. We collected lava rocks from local beaches to create the volcano mural that defines the bathroom and the red cinder trail was locally sourced from a volcanic red cinder cone. The entryway mosaic was made possible by broken tiles that were going to be thrown away at Floor Decor in Hilo. The hardwood floors came from my uncle's hardwood floor business after a sample batch for a hotel wasn't the exact color that the interior designers were going for (lucky us). Our water catchment tank and stove top are second-hand and we are utterly proud of it all! We hope you remember the beauty of this place & bit of land long after you are gone, to us, "eco" can also mean comfy!
We are situated in the Ohia jungle. Throughout a day only a handful of cars will drive by. (Once, we had lumber delivered in the middle of the road because we didn't have a driveway yet.) From the house only one house is visible in the back distance but you can occasionally hear our front neighbors. There are abandoned vehicles down the road but that's not uncommon in rural neighborhoods on the Big Island.

Our Retreat is a labor of our love and was built as such. A getaway to relax, hike the nearby beaches, forests, and volcanoes and to simply enjoy life. Our place is a peaceful spot completely off the grid in nature. It is 8 miles to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. You’ll love our place because of the location, the ambiance, and the outdoor space. Our goal was to bring the outdoors in and the indoors outside. Our place is good for couples and solo adventurers.
This beautiful peaceful gem is located 8 miles to the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. The house is secluded off the road for privacy and to be as close to nature as possible. The house is elevated 15 feet but the bed elevates you 20 feet off the ground. It is quite a unique experience. Arrival You first arrive at a gravel driveway and a wood chipped winding path. You pass beside and under the Hapu’u Fern Tree tops and orchids as well as the tree canopy. The trail to our house is about 120 feet deep in seclusion. There are little pockets of ferns and flowers along the trail as well as a Ganesh and a Buddha keeping a peaceful eye on our little sanctuary. Downstairs Lanai You will find yourself on the lower deck/lanai. This lanai is surrounded by hanging plants and places to relax in your own private Zen. There is an 8-foot teak Balinese Bale' daybed to lounge in and it can be a place to relax that is also functional. During our travels to Bali, Indonesia one of our favorite memories is laying in a daybed surrounded by plants and nature, complete Zen and that is what we have re-created in Hawaii. This daybed is a beautiful space to be next to nature and relax, read a book, take a nap and enjoy life. Remember it is vacation time! Looking across from the daybed is a handmade teak bistro set to sip some coffee or tea, read a book or play a game. There are two half tables where you can make a cup of coffee or tea or pick up a bottled water. Downstairs bathroom The center walkway has two barn doors with separate bathroom and shower areas. The shower is a large space with a ten-foot ceiling and large shower "rainwater" nozzle that mimics the soft falling of rain. The shower is powered by solar and on-demand propane for heat. There is a bench to sit and relax and soak in the moment. With the forest in mind, the shower room has bamboo walls and hanging plants to create unique ambiance. The mist from the shower help feed the plants/orchids. There is cruelty-free and nature-friendly shampoo, conditioner, and soap provided. Toiletries in case you forgot any are provided in the bathroom. Across from the shower is the bathroom with woven bamboo walls and a handmade Koa wood wash basin, flushing toilet, mirror, vanity and toiletries for the shower and bathroom are provided in the baskets. In the center walkway, there is another handmade Koa wood wash basin. Upstairs Lanai: You are now winding up the stairs and you arrive to the upstairs Lanai. Another place to breathe and relax. As you explore upstairs, the covered upper deck/lanai catches the rainwater to turn into reusable shower and toilet water. The covered lanai gives you the chance to sit out in the rain forest and watch the rainforest replenish itself. The animals and trees become animated at different times of the day. At night you can stargaze. The furniture is inviting you to “sit and take a load off." There you can breathe in the forest and enjoy the scenery and views of the Hapu’u Fern Tree tops. Towering above you, 40-60 feet in height, are Ohia, Koa, Guava and Eucalyptus trees which comprise the tree canopy. There are wicker chairs with overstuffed cushions and a cozy footrest for two. There are side tables for drinks and snacks and a small table you can play cards on. At night the Coqui Frogs will serenade you with their mating songs from the trees. Bedroom: As you pass through the keyless entry window door you will find another gem. There is an airy feel due to 12 foot ceilings and cathedral style windows in the trusses along with three 4x8 foot windows. Then you will see our little gem of a bed: we are very proud of our own designed “perch platform bed” that nestles you 4 feet in the air. You will feel like you are perched in a tree. The comfy mattress makes for a perfect and tranquil night sleep. The view from the bed is a panoramic view from the 8x4 foot front bay window and on clear nights you can gaze at the stars through the cathedral style windows in front and behind the bed. Now it is your choice to watch stars, birds or the clouds from the bed. There is a built in closet within and beneath the bed where you can put your suitcases or hang your clothes. This bed has it all and we made it to simplify and organize your luggage. No messes, all hidden and contained in the semi walk in closet. On the sides of the bed are two sets of stairs and each side has their own charging USB station for your phone or tablet. Birds, amphibians and animals: Animals you may see in the gardens or in the treehouse: Coqui Frogs, a variety of lizards, Geckos, Jackson’s Chameleons, Endangered Pueo owls have been spotted intermittently at our property. The endemic black-billed ‘apapane, salmon-billed i’iwi, the white and brown ‘elepaio, and the yellow-green colored ‘amakihi are some of the forest birds of Hawaii that can be found. Additionally, feral pigs occasionally scamper about the forest floor but do not like human interaction. Pests: Mosquitoes. This is the rainforest so mosquitoes are common. We provide DEET and non-DEET bug sprays or you can bring your own. We do ask that you do not spray yourself while on our furniture or linens. It stains and is almost impossible to get out of linens. Mosquitoes: we offer bug spray Here is a list of the amenities that are available to you: • Bale’ Daybed • Bistro set and Rattan seating • Platform bed and closet • Outdoor shower  • Flushing toilet with septic • Cruelty-Free Soap and Enviro-Friendly/Shampoo/Conditioner • Towels • Ceiling fan and light • Clean sheets • Bathroom and center sinks • Ice cooler for food and drinks • Mugs and cups for drinks • Maps and Hawaii destination books to use • Cards • Board Games • Books • Outlets (3-prong and USB styles) • Flashlights • Off-road parking • solar fairy lights • solar lights • local snack and water bottles • Bug spray and Citronella candles BEFORE YOU BOOK We wanted to be precise on any hindrances that you may experience we call it uniqueness but make sure you know what to expect before booking our space. We love our house and we are sure you will as well for a Zen –like peaceful experience. The house is off-grid and self sufficient but tradeoffs come with being unique and off-grid. 1. The Rainforest. The rain forest name says it all. How unique is it to be in the United States and in a Rain Forest close to a National Park? The green you will be surrounded by is powered and fed by the rain. It rains 30% of all days. The forest rejuvenates and replenishes with every rain. Our little house lives off the rain catchment therefore we enjoy the rain in all aspects: It gives life; it gives us water. You can experience anything from sun, to mist to torrential downpour. The volcano helps with this ecological system and therefore it is a unique experience to be had but rainforests are not for everyone. 2. The Treehouse, it is 15 feet off the ground. If afraid of heights this is a mild view but might not be right for you. There are only 2 levels of sturdy stairs to climb. No ladder like other places but if any problems walking back 200 feet to our structure or climbing 2 flights of stairs, you may want to reassess staying here. You will need to carry your luggage back and up the stairs. We have a wagon for use but you will still need to haul the luggage or items you are bringing to the house. 3. The Rain. The rainwater catchment system provides water for the water faucets, shower and toilet. It is filtered but not sanitized and in the jungle it is unwise and unsafe to drink the water. We provide water for you to enjoy during your stay. If you consume large amounts of water you might want to bring some with you as well. 4. The Noise. The rain catchment water pumps do make a small amount of noise but only when in use for showers, sinks, and flushing the toilet. The rain falling off the tree canopy does make noises when falling from 40-60 feet and hitting the structure and covered canopy. Additionally, there is a water trap for the structure on the back wall that does make a soft noise while gathering the water when the rain is falling moderately hard. At night, the Coqui’s chirping/singing can be loud. We love the serenade as it drifts us off to sleep but some are bothered by the frogs chirping. During the day and at dusk the native beautiful songbirds can be loud while gathering food and communicating with each other. There are also neighborhood dogs that can be heard barking intermittently in the distance. The last potential "noisy" concern may be the stillness of a forest or the absence of noise which can bother some people that are not use to “unplugging” from technology. 5. Solar Power. The solar panels are located on the roof and batteries are located downstairs. When the skies are clear and sunny the panels gather sunlight and convert into energy but when overcast or raining the solar panels gather small amounts of energy. We have ample amounts but still limited energy. You can run your devices but must be aware of energy conservation because there is only so much stored per day and it is all dependent on the weather conditions and what you are consuming. No hairdryers or irons are allowed for this reason: too much energy consumption. We have battery operated and solar lights throughout the structure as well. Phones and tablets can be charged at anytime with USB ports but laptops should be charged sparingly. 6. The Bugs. Mainly mosquitoes. They are not big but they are present in the rain forest. Hawaii does have mosquito borne illnesses, but mostly on the other side of the island in the Captain Cook area. Being in a rain forest you do need mosquito awareness. Wear mosquito repellant that we supply to you. If you are visiting Hawaii I would suggest buying your own bug spray and sunblock, you will need it throughout the island. With all these considerations…we absolutely love our house and find it to be tranquil while energizing us physically and mentally for the day. We love living in nature but being close to all things. 7. This treehouse has no cooking facilities. We encourage our guests to taste the different flavors that the island has to offer. • 8 miles (13 minutes) to Hawai’i Volcano National Park • 12.2 miles (18 minutes) to Keaau • 20.4 miles (33 minutes) to Hilo • 21.8 miles (35 minutes) to Rainbow Falls • 23.5 miles (35 minutes) to Pahoa • 34.8 miles (51 minutes) to the Lava Viewing area at Kalapana (no direct route) • 36 miles (58 minutes) to Akaka Falls • 45.3 miles (54 minutes) to Naalehu/South Point
The treehouse is on a quiet gravel road a little over a mile from the highway. The nearest neighbors are a few acres away in all directions. It is remote but close to all things. We have great neighbors but they love their privacy as we love ours. Orchid Isle Estates is surrounded by tree canopies and a myriad of orchids. There are some great restaurants in the town of Volcano as well as in Hilo, Kea'au and Pahoa. Please see our guide at the house for more details There is a little local store, Hirano's, close by for small items and a quick bite. There are two stores in Volcano, a big grocery store in Kea'au and more in Hilo. Farmers Markets are amazing here and no matter what the day you can probably find one open. I have a guide to farmers markets in my book in the treehouse. Our guide to the island sights is our personal opinion to find off the wall touristy and untouristy areas of interest. Beaches, farmers markets, waterfalls, hikes and lava tubes are all contained in the book at the treehouse. I also have printed out guides for you to take as well.

Wake up at the feet of Pele with an amazing sunrise and ocean view from your bed! Charming one bedroom off grid, eco-cabin in sunny Kalapana. Sweeping ocean views and lava viewing (when flowing) from front yard. Explore any of the 7 newly created black sand beaches. Feel the energy and witness creation first hand. This is once in a life time bucket list material! Come check it off yours!
Come visit and stay in the most unique, awe inspiring vacation rental you'll find! This is the #1 most visited rental in sunny Kalapana for a reason. You'll be able to access the newly created black sand beaches and hiking trails. Hike or drive from McKenzie park over the freshly hardened fissar 8 lava flow to Pohoiki. Pohoiki was transformed during this last flow and now boasts a beautiful crescent black sand beach, 2 healing ponds that are thermally heated and several fun tide pools. The cabin is inside of Kalapana gardens subdivision built on the hardened 1991 lava flow. Front row viewing of lava (when flowing) and closer, VIP access to lava hiking and exploring. Free parking on site at cabin so bypass all the tourist parking hassles! Closest rental cabin to lava and only one on the main county maintained road in Kalapana Gardens. All cars can park easily on my property. Ocean views on two sides of cabin and volcano view on the third! Seperate detached bedroom with lanai, queen size bed with ocean and lava glow views. Spectacular star gazing in the clear night skies. Solar powered cabin with full refrigerator and freezer, high speed wireless internet, propane dual burner cook top, french press for coffee, pots, pans and utensils. Cabin has hard wood floors and built in sky lights to allow lots of natural light in during the day. Compost toilet which we use to make soil to replant palm trees and native Hawaiian species on the scorched lava earth. Cabin also has an open air propane heated hot shower! Perfect for couples or small families. Enjoy the best sunrises and sunsets in the world all from the raised viewing lanai/yoga deck out back. The property is covered in papaya trees, banana trees & pineapples. It also has a cherry tree, mango, avacado, dragon fruit, lime, coconut and several variations of palms. There's also numerous Ti trees which in Hawaiian culture are used to line the borders of your property to ward off evil spirits. Cook pine trees, bamboo, autograph tree, beautiful and bright coleus bush's, orchids, plumeria and bougainvillea. There's also hundreds of different small succulents that line the paths in the back of the property. Look closely to find these exotic gems that thrive in the lava and abundance of sun that Kalapana is blessed with. Make sure to stay on the paths so you don't crush any of these lovely small plants. I love the blank canvas the land provides and I'm excited to watch my garden and beautiful plants grow! You'll be surrounded by the energy of an active volcano and the deep blues of the Pacific ocean this is truly a once in a life time opportunity! Seize it!
Kalapana gardens is a great mix of eccentric locals, homesteaders, transplants and vacation rentals. The pace is slow and the aloha is abundant. It's also one of the driest places on the east side of Hawaii. Other things to see and do around the area are New Kaimu black sand beach, Kahena black sand beach, the Puna coastal trail to Ha'ena (shipmans beach), hike or drive from McKenzie park to pohoiki surf spot with its newly formed crescent black sand beach and thermal heated healing ponds, Wednesday night market at Uncle Roberts, Sunday is the Makuu farmers market. You can get food and supplies in the hippie outlaw town of Pahoa! I also do tours of the hidden gems of Puna that only locals know and other big tour companies don't do!! Just ask. Staying here provides locals only access to the gardens and free on-site, front row parking to one of nature's coolest displays! Grab a beer, kick back and enjoy this amazing feat of nature.

Enjoy this Plantation House with lovely details from the "before time" of Hawaiian sugar cane days. Built in the 1930s for a Japanese plantation worker, this vintage haven has 2 bedrooms + a sleeping porch. The village of Pahala is a gem of the Ka’u district, surrounded by wide open spaces on the slopes of Mauna Loa. It's minutes to Punalu'u Beach, where green sea turtles rest on the famous black sand, and near Volcanoes Park and South Point, the southernmost tip of the U.S.
The house has beautiful wood details from the plantation carpenter who lived here in its early years, and a lush garden full of native varieties of plants. At Hale Ilima you'll be surrounded by tropical greenery - from ti plants to plumeria, hibiscus and many fruit trees, including orange, tangerine and avocado.
Pahala is a small town, easily explored on foot. Within 3 blocks of Hale Ilima are the post office, Mizuno grocery, Longs Drugs, and a Bank of Hawai'i branch. A few blocks farther is the Pahala library and school, where the pool, tennis court, gymnasium, and playground are open to the public.

This suite is upstairs in a modern house located on an organic farm. It includes a cozy bedroom with a king size bed, plenty of natural light, a private bathroom, and a living room for your use only. Also has beautiful views of south point. The living room looks out on the downstairs, but has screens set up for privacy. Infant and child beds are available, and children are welcome to sleep in our son’s tree house for free. There is also a second upstairs bedroom available for an extra charge.
There are two sides of our business (The Terraces), the farm and the rentals. Our motto for both is, "where small things matter, choose wisely." "The Terraces" is the life long dream of Stacey Richards. It was created to provide an environment for people to learn about the importance of diet, nutrition, climate, and community. We have two goals for our farm: The first is to provide members of our community and visitors with fresh, organic, and locally sourced food and flowers. People often only notice the general qualities of food, and so often miss the small and important details that truly make a meal healthy. The second is to create a culture where the people eating our food know how their meals were produced, and how much joy was put into creating it. We feel this is important because part of the enjoyment of a meal is knowing the care that went into creating every aspect of it, from the growing to the cooking. We want people to understand and make choices about every aspect of the way their food is produced. Our vacation rental has one simple goal: to help you have the best possible visit to our property and island. If you are someone who just wants a clean and comfortable space to rest your head at the end of the day, that is something we are happy to provide. If you want more out of your vacation rental than that, we would love for you to join us for dinner or help you check out some of our favorite places. We are here to make your trip as wonderful as possible, and we are excited to help you accomplish that goal in whatever way works for you. We provide all of this with the love and attention to detail of people who are aware of the importance of the small touches. In a nutshell, most of our life is made up of small, and often unconscious, choices. In both sides of our business we believe in making these choices consciously. We do our cleaning, eating, growing, decoration, etc. all with a purpose.
The Hawaiian Ocean View Estates development consists of 10,697 1-acre lots north of the Hawaii Belt Road in the western part of the District of Kaʻū. The terrain varies from rugged lava fields to ohiʻa trees and other vegetation. Elevation ranges from about 1,500 ft (460 m) up to the 5,000-foot (1,500 m) level. Initial sales began in the late 1950s. The original developer of HOVE was the Crawford Oil Company. Later, other subdivisions were put in place downslope of HOVE and the Hawaii Belt Road. In the early 1980s a service station and a hardware store were built. In January 2004, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park purchased the nearby property previously known as Kahuku Ranch. In 1989 the Ocean View Town Center was developed and the Ocean View Road Maintenance Corporation began an extensive rebuilding program of the roads. Shortly thereafter the Ocean View Development Corporation started a new market which included a laundromat and restaurant. Ocean View now has three shopping centers. There are now three gas stations, three grocery stores, a hardware store and and four restaurants. Ocean View has a post office with the ZIP code of 96737.

New construction...my cousin from Portland’s dream getaway. It is a great location near South Point, with bamboo floors, and fantastic views of the ocean as far as the eye can see. Situated on one acre of Ohia beauty and privacy. No neighbors on either side, but a wonderful neighbor across the street. LOCATED in OCEANVIEW NOT Captain Cook, which is our zip code for mail delivery. The Koa Cottage is a perfect accommodation for exploring the South end of the Big Island. It has a very cozy, homey feel and is equipped with a propane fridge, propane stove, hot water and off the grid Solar and LED lights. We have a small propane heater for chilly nights....and lots of blankets. The cottage is insulated, but still chilly at night, if we have a cold front. Great deal at this price!

Full directions will be given when you book with us. There is a lot to do right here in Na’alehu. Green sand beach parking lot at south point is only 15 minutes away and Black sands beach is just a 20 minute drive North towards Volcano. Be sure to try Kau coffee while in Na’alehu or in Pahala at the Ka’u coffee mill. The Punaluu bakery in Na’alehu has pastries, sweet bread & also sandwiches & salads for a quick bite or take-away. Hana Hou & Shaka restaurants as well as a food truck in town provide a nice choice of food. There is a cooler in the apartment for those day long excursions.

An hour 30 min away Richardson's Beach Park in Hilo is a great black sand beach to snorkel (our personal favorite). We provide snorkeling gear, beach towels, umbrella, chairs, cooler and boogie boards. Just north of Hilo on the Hamakua coast is Akaka Falls State Park has a self- guided 0.4 mile loop trail that takes you past Kahuna Falls and the 442 ft Akaka Falls. The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden on Scenic Drive is a special place too (fee to get in). Trails, waterfalls and ocean vistas are a few of the things to see there. Rainbow Falls and the Boiling pots in Hilo are on my list (no swimming here as there are dangerous under currents). Hilo also has one of our favorite parks. The Lili'uokalani Gardens on Banyan Drive with views of Hilo Bay and Coconut Island. Also worth seeing is the Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens. It is the only tropical rainforest zoo in the United States and has over 80 animals. Also an hour 30 minutes away, Kona is the islands tourist hub but while there you can also appreciate the white sand beaches & happy hours dotted all along Alii Drive. We love Costco and recommend stopping there on your way to Discovery Harbour from Kona, there are other markets in Kona too. The closest grocery store to Discovery Harbour is in Ocean View 20 minutes. The gas station in Naalehu has a small convenience store. If we are traveling from Hilo we usually shop at KTA, Safeway or Target before heading home. Kohala coastline is spectacular. Well worth a visit to the west side of the island North of Kona . Pick one white sands beach and spend the day playing in the blue pacific. Take your sunblock and water & plan on setting out early. There are so many beaches to choose from. We will have some suggestions in our tour book we put together for you. As well as places to eat.

Aloha! Hana Hou Cabin-Motel provides an opportunity to relax and enjoy your stay in a small town in rural Hawai'i, on the Big Island. Located adjacent to the Hana Hou Restaurant, you will not have to worry about cooking or searching for a great meal. The cabins are located midway between Kona and Hilo, in the Ka'u District. Remember you are behind a popular working restaurant and there is noise..You are in the country so you will hear birds and chickens . This is a rural motel in a small town ..not a vacation condo..but the beds are comfy ..the rooms are clean and the water is hot. We are air conditioning free and use the open window, fans and the nice breeze to make us comfortable. If noise is an issue for you perhaps consider an upgrade to our larger cabin situated farther from the restaurant kitchen. It has the same amenities. Take advantage of staying in a town that is located in the vicinity of various places of interest, which all exude the meaning of, 'Old Hawai'i'. Ka Lae (South Point), The Green Sand Beach and Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, are amongst a few of the unspoiled coastlines here in Ka'u. Sprawling ranch lands, mountain hiking, the famous Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and the new southern section of Kahuku are only a drive away. Explore lava tubes, snorkel, tour a coffee farm or the volcano winery and buy from the source. Ka'u is the perfect eco-tourist destination , and the cabin-motel is perfect for an overnight stay when visiting the volcano. Eliminate the long drive back to Kona or Hilo and visit the other sights in Kau the next day. Each cabin has a private bathroom with a shower and toiletries. Why You’ll Love It ❤Recently updated interior design featuring new textiles, lighting upgrades, quartz counters and new tile kitchen back-splash ❤Thoughtful open plan design AND ocean view from both condo and lanai. ❤Experienced, dedicated, Superhost owners pay attention to the details ❤Comfortable queen bed & lots of storage so you can feel at home ❤Great resort vibe & amenities like pool, hot tub & grills ❤Little extras, like a real kitchen, make all the difference ❤Extra large ground floor lanai for outdoor Hawaii living - it's like an extra room and even has it's own ceiling fan ❤Easy walking distance to #1 black sand beach park on Island ❤Rural Hawaii location an ideal for those seeking adventure away from crowds ❤Value! The average cost of an ocean view hotel room on the Big Island is $380 / night! Our nightly price includes all taxes (over 14% of the total you see). ❤Peace of Mind: Our Unit is permitted by the County of Hawaii. You'll see our permit in the photos. This permit is required for all legal Short Term Vacation Rentals. Knowing we are permitted and meeting all county regulations is your guarantee of no hassles or possible cancellation due to future law enforcement actions. Amenities Complimentary high speed WiFi. Free Parking Pool & hot tub (community facility) Tropical Garden and manicured grounds Beach chairs, beach towels and snorkel equipment are included No pets Wifi equipped, Smart TV and HDMI connection Full size refrigerator / freezer Microwave, stove / oven Need to Know The condo does not have air conditioning; there are three ceiling fans and generous Hawaiian louver windows for ventilation Price shown includes Hawaii taxes - General Excise Tax and Transient Accommodations Tax. Your only other charge from us is a once per stay cleaning charge. Our condo is in a rural location for exploring remote, less developed and less visited parts of the Big Island. We are the closest (only) resort condos to Volcanoes National Park. Drive from our beachfront location to the higher elevation park entrance in about 30 minutes. You will find the real Hawaii because you will be in the real Hawaii! As of October 2019, the current average hotel room price for a non-ocean view room on the Big Island is $260 / night plus tax. The Ocean View average hotel rate is nearly $400 a night. We hope you'll agree that our ocean view condo, at far less than half the average nightly hotel rate (non ocean view!) - including all taxes - is a wonderful value.
Two small towns are within 10 minutes in each direction. Naalehu has several restaurants (one of our favorites is Hana Hou) and the famous Punaluu Bakery (a must stop!), a hardware store, Shaka's bar (southernmost bar in the USA), post office and twice-weekly farmer's market. Pahala has a small grocery store - the Superette and a Long's drugstore. There's a hospital in Pahala and both locations have gas stations and a few other local businesses to explore. The big agricultural attractions in the area are coffee and macadamia nuts; you'll see the farm lands all around. There are some local farms who offer tours and several coffee growers who offer tastings and direct from grower sales. South Point (Ka Lae) and the Green Sand Beach (it really is green!) are located within about a half hour drive. Every visitor to Hawaii Island will want to see the world's most active volcano - Kilauea - in Volcano National Park. The condo is located 30 minutes from the park entrance and is the only location so close to the park that offers our resort setting and guest amenities. Your park admission is good for 7 days. There is no city here. It's why we love it. We were so surprised to find the slice of real Hawaii that still exists. There is not a lot here - unless one counts peace, quiet, dark sky-filled nights, friendly people and their history as "things". Then, in that case, Ka'u is overflowing with Hawaii's real bounty.

Aloha! Our Hawaiian plantation style home is located in the small village of Pahala on the Big Island in the district of Ka'u close to Volcano National Park, Punalu'u Black Sand Beach and the small town of Na'alehu, the southernmost town in the United States! Our goal is to provide a clean well stocked place for folks to stay at a very reasonable price. Our nightly rate reflects the required 14.75% required by the State of Hawaii.
Our house was built in 1947 during the sugar plantation days. We are told that the company carpenter built this house for himself. It has been totally refurbished and it is a real joy to us to be able to live here. We are happy to share our good fortune with others who enjoy "the good old days"! Our small ohana runs along the outside of the carport. It is cozy with 3 rooms. There is one bedroom with a queen size bed to sleep 2, a sitting room with a futon, chair and two folding tables. The mini- kitchen has supplies for basic needs - sink, microwave, coffee maker, silverware and a few utensils and a mini refrigerator. Be sure to stop at Mizuno's, our local small grocery store, if you need groceries. If you can't find what you need, just ask. They have an incredible variety considering the small size of the store. The windows in the ohana are jalousies which also allow for ventilation. There is are two standing fans available. The bathroom consists of a toilet and shower and is located out your carport entrance door across the carport. It is your private bathroom. If you need a sink for washing up, you can use the one in the ohana kitchen or the large concrete one in the carport. You will be able to park your vehicle just outside the carport leaving plenty of room to access your car. You have 2 egress doors, a carport door and a backyard door off your mini kitchen. Both have screen doors which allow plenty of ventilation, especially when the trade winds are blowing. You also have use of the washer and dryer in the carport. Your bathroom is on the same side of the carport as the washer and dryer. We try to be available for any needs you might have while respecting your privacy. You can contact us via airbnb text or just ring the doorbell or talk to us when you see us. We do have WiFi and most guests are successful in their attempts to use their phones or laptops. However, please be aware that sometimes our provider does not seem to do the best job here in Pahala. Connections can be spotty at times. We are in Hawaii so we do have insects from time to time. We use human and animal friendly pest control on a regular basis to keep bug encounters to a minimum. Please let us know if you have a problem with insects or bugs during your stay here. There are no poisonous insects or any snakes at all on our island. We have an indoor/outdoor cat, Zoe, and a very spoiled 8# dog, Sami, who lives inside with us. In addition, we recently rescued a very friendly larger dog who lives in the backyard, Max, and a kitten, Rocky, who lives in the house with us. Most areas in Hawaii have alot of dogs and roosters making noise at night. It doesn't bother us much but some of our guests have said they have a hard time sleeping. We offer earplugs but beyond that, there is not alot we can do.
Pahala is a village of about 1600 friendly folks. It's a good walking area with a local bank (ATM), pharmacy, rural hospital, and grocery store. The area high school is located here and the campus includes a swimming pool, tennis court and basketball court open for public use free of charge. There is also a small gym in the same area. Ask if you are interested. These are located about 10 minutes or less walking distance from your ohana. Ka'u Coffee Mill is just 3 miles up the road and beautiful Wood Valley beyond that. It is 6 miles to historic Punalu'u Black Sand Beach which is home to frequently visiting sea turtles. If you are lucky, you may see the babies hatch and scurry to the sea! We are about 30 minutes to Volcano National Park, an hour+ to Hilo airport, 2 hours to Kona airport and 15 minutes to Na'alehu and nice eateries, farmer's market on Wednesday mornings and the world famous Punalu'u Bakery, and about 45 minutes to South Point, the most southern point in the United States. We are well worth visiting just to enjoy the gorgeous flowers and trees here in Pahala! We have frequent ocean views here and there in Pahala...a peekaboo view from our house. We will be happy to show you some of our favorite drives and walks. Just ask! You will love it!

Current activity at the summit of Kilauea has nearly stopped, and Volcanoes National Park has reopened! As a result, all of the Big Island is virtually vog-free. We have beautiful Blue skies. You get the entire guesthouse on family property. Quiet, private, safe. Millions of stars at night. Great location at South end of Big Island. At 3400 ft; perfect temperature to sleep after hot days sightseeing! Outdoor Kitchen! Freezer space available if needed. Updated wifi.
One Bedroom, 1 bath guesthouse, King size bed in bedroom, with a queen-size down fold-out in the front room. Approximately 12 miles from South Point turn off, with easy drives to Volcano, Hilo, Captain Cook, Kealekekua Bay, Hononaunau/Place of Refuge, or Kona. Very private and quiet, There are many things to do within driving distance: Green sand beach, Southpoint, Captain Cook, Black Sand Beach, snorkeling, Two-step Beach, and many more. We do provide basic snorkeling gear. Drinking water will be provided at no extra cost to you. Outdoor kitchen with small refrigerator, freezer space available if needed, microwave, hotplate, electric skillet, pots and pans, coffee pot, outdoor deep sink, outdoor sitting area, and comfortable patio. There are two horses on the property. The house is at 3400 ft, so it is much cooler than many places on the island.
Very quiet in our area. So quiet at night we provide a fan for white noise if necessary. We also provide extra blankets and a small space heater, as we find that people underestimate the overnight temperature and tend to get cold in the winter. If the sky is clear, as it usually is at night, you can see billions of stars. Since the vog has finally cleared, the nights are absolutely beautiful.

4-10-2020 In compliance with County of Hawaii rules regarding COVID-19, we are unable to accept reservations until further notice. Enjoy our incredible clean zen retreat in one of Hawaii's most scenic places, K’au region at Punalu'u Black Sand Beach. It’s a short 1/3 mile walk to the beach, crashing waves, palm trees & flowers, amazing mountain and ocean views, in the countryside of macademia nut & coffee farms.
Welcome to the countryside of genuine Old Hawaii, amidst oceanfront coffee plantations and macademia nut farms, with crashing ocean waves, idyllic beaches with sea turtles, far away from stereotypical "tourist attractions". This is a magical, life-changing place. Be ready to connect with nature, see the Milky Way in the dark night sky, or experience the awe of a full moon rising over the ocean. The positive energy is contagious. Enjoy this gorgeous ground-floor studio condo with king size bed, full bathroom with sunken tub, fully equipped kitchen. The swimming pool overlooks the golf course and ocean with crashing waves. This is a peaceful, quiet, remote place where you'll sleep to the sounds of the ocean waves and wake to the sounds of songbirds and swaying palm trees in the tradewinds. The pool is just steps from your lanai, with gas Weber BBQ grills, ice maker, restrooms and outdoor shower, plus a koi pond and the most awesome sunken hot tub you've ever experienced. You'll enjoy the new 55" Samsung 4K Smart TV with cable tv where you can watch Showtime, Netflix, YouTube, surf the internet, or AirPlay from your Apple products (iPhone, iPad, MacBook etc) using our Apple TV. High speed wireless internet is free both in our space and at the pool. It's especially fun down by the beach or in an open field under the stars. Included: washer and dryer, refrigerator, two burner electric cooktop, microwave, rice cooker, blender and countertop oven, pots and pans, beach umbrella, snorkel mask, insulated bag, ice chest, and large towels. Please use only the provided plastic cups and plates at the pool. Quiet hours from 9pm-8am. NO SMOKING in the condo or on the lanai (designated smoking areas with seats/table are just steps away, or when strolling the nearby golf course or beaches obviously). Punalu'u Black Sand beach is an easy 5 min walk (1/3 mile) down the paved road. Along the way, you can enjoy vistas across the golf course and up the countryside macademia nut and coffee farms. The immediate area is a historic native Hawaiian site, with several ritual centers (heiau) and a trail by the sea (kahakai) to explore (for more info, google Save Punalu'u). There is no heat or a/c because it's not needed (it's always between 65-85 degrees and if it's chilly or hot it only lasts a few hours till the tradewinds keep the air moving and it's lovely!) We have a ceiling fan and floor fan. The space is for two adults. No parties. No pets allowed in the condo complex. If you have a certified registered service dog, please let us know in advance. The golf course is currently closed (pending new ownership) but there’s an open course nearby at Volcano Village. Rates plus 10.25% transient accommodations tax and 4.712% general excise tax. This is a legal short term vacation rental unit in the county of Hawaii, Big Island. STVR-19-367710. TA-128-859-5968-01
The area is old unspoiled Hawaii. We're between the towns of Naalehu (where you'll find the delicious famous Punalu’u Bakery, 76 gas station with snacks, a small local grocery store called Will and Grace, Ace Hardware, Shaka Bar and Restaurant, Hana Hou restaurant) and Pahala (where you'll find Long's Drugstore, Bank of Hawaii, and a small grocery store called Minuzo's Suprette). Nearby you can tour the Ka'u Coffee Mill to see and taste delicious local coffee (many say better than Kona coffee) and macademia nuts. You'll definitely want space in your carry on to take some tasty treats home.

We are a 20-acre start-up farm in beautiful Wood Valley, Pahala in the Ka’u district of the Big Island of Hawaii. We also have delicious organic honey and a variety of fruits for your enjoyment. In addition to the professional chef service, we also recently added a Baby Sitting service which is quite popular with our guests. If you would like to have these extra services, please contact our farm manger, Matt Drayer or lodge manager, Adrian Drayer( Matt's wife) prior to your arrival. Their contact info will be available to you once you book a reservation.
Wood Valley is a magical place on the southeast slope of Mauna Loa. It contains a cooperative of small farms, including macadamia nut, coffee, livestock, fruits and veggies. It also includes an authentic Tibetan Buddhist temple that has been visited and blessed by the Dalai Lama. There are some fun places to go to:

If you are looking for a peaceful place to relax and unwind, this is it! Transient accommodations tax of 10.25% and general excise tax of 4.5% are added during booking..
Colony One at Sea Mountain resort is very serene and perfect for those who want to experience the true Hawaiian heritage. Located on the South end of the Big Island, this condo is only 60 minutes from Hilo; 80 minutes from Kona; and 25 minutes from Volcano National Park. The two closest towns are Na’alehu (7 miles South) and Pahala (5 miles North). Walk to the world famous Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, and swim with the endangered hawksbill and green turtles which bask on the beach all day long. The water at this beach is warm but has underwater springs providing cool fresh water. Legend has it that in the time of drought, the ancient Hawaiians living in the area would dive underwater with a jug to get their fresh water. Also nearby and short drives from the resort are Green Sands Beach, South Point Cliffs, Kilauea Volcano, and Ka’u Coffee Mills. Greens Sands Beach is the only natural beach in the world that encompasses beautiful green sand made out of olivine crystals. South Point cliffs are the most southern point in the United States and are world renowned for its amazing views and cliff jumping excitement. In the other direction, Kilauea constantly spews out lava in the Volcano National Park for all to see year round. The Ka’u Coffee Mill is famous world round for it’s superior unique coffee taste- see the farm itself and take a tour of the beautiful uplands of the Ka’u district. Punalu’u Bake Shop located in Na’alehu features freshly made Sweet Bread which now ships globally, and can be sampled and enjoyed in your lunch sandwich while lounging in the gorgeously maintained grounds and gardens. Ka’u has some of the most isolated and untouched landscapes in all of Hawaii. Both the Ocean and pool have warm and crystal clear, perfect for rejuvenating the body and soul. The island itself is the only place in the world that contains all 7 geographic climates. Explore icy tundras in the winter, lush green rain forests, and of course the beautiful relaxing beaches throughout the district and island.

Private 10-sided rustic and unique eco-cabin in mystical South Point, Hawaii -- a hidden gem nestled in a private Eucalyptus and Plumeria grove on a 3 acre farm. Featuring a 1-bedroom king size bed, pull out futon, deck with thatch roof, out-door bath house and outdoor shower. The cabin features a full open breeze deck with a thatch roof, solar power and high-speed internet. A short drive from the incredible green sand beach, under 1 hour to volcano and halfway between Kona and Hilo!
Suitable for couples and "off-the-beaten path" eclectic adventurer seekers! There is an additional pull-out futon couch/bed in the living room for additional guests, but the space is better suited to a couple as it is not large. We live in rural Hawaii, therefore, you will likely see geckos and insects during your stay, however, there are no snakes in Hawaii! This is "real" Hawaii complete with the meditative sounds of coqui frogs to lull you into blissful evening dreams! Spend an afternoon lounging on the lanai and take in the sounds of native birds and aroma of Plumeria flowers.
Excerpt from Hawai'i Vortex Field Guide: "Besides being the landing place of the first Hawaiians, and home to a remarkable green sand beach, South Point, known locally as Ka lae, is said by the local residents to be like a rift in time. UFO sightings and intense energies are things you may hear about taking place there. The ley line coming into the South Point vortex of the Big Island, not far from Kalani, is considered to be one of the most powerful to be on land. Author William "Pila" Chiles talks about the South Point as a "doorway" where "the density of three dimensional reality seems to be very thin" and the energy is "very unusual". The South Point vortex is believed to be an aperture or 'doorway' between dimensions, one of many to exist in the world. It's our belief after researching and writing this book that Hawai'i is connected in some ways to India as well as Egypt, two other sacred locations, by what is referred to as the World Grid."

It is Hawaiian style Decour with fabulous sunsets and stargazing at night. We have a million dollar view you can see the ocean from your Ohana Then from the hot tub you can see all the way to south point.
They can use all of the Ohana and will have access to the yard and gardens along with an outside small table and chairs in front of their Ohana. There are places to set and enjoy the outside among the garden areas.
We are close to the famous green sands beach, and south point, and not far from the black sands beach. Plus we have a great caving Expedition that some of our guest have said it’s the best on the island. You have to make reservations for that. We have a great coffee shop called the coffee grind. There are several place to eat near by and bakery. We have two grocery stores, post office, gift shop, auto store and hard ware store Ace, all in our little part of the island. On Sat there is a farmers market and on Wednesday in a town about 10 miles away from us they have a very nice farmers market. Which makes for a nice drive and visit to the famous Punalu'u Bakery that makes all the wonderful sweet breads for the island.
