“This owes its planning to the visionary spirit of the Almadas whose restoration work brought a new brightness to the city of Porto in the second half of the 18th Century. The road was extended as far as Alameda da Aguardente, today's Praça Marquês de Pombal. Its imposing façades house some fine examples of the Art Nouveau style. Over 1500 metres long, the Rua de Santa Catarina, part of which has been pedestrianised, is the busiest shopping street in the city centre with clothing stores, haberdashery, shoe shops, the Via Catarina shopping mall and countless street vendors, less or more legal and carts selling handicrafts and jewelry.”

“Historically, Obidos was presented to the Queen of Portugal on her wedding day, a tradition that began with Queen Urraca in 1214 and continued until the 19th century. This royal patronage has left an enduring legacy of pride within the town, and today it is one of the most characterful towns of central Portugal. For visitors, Obidos is a charming town to explore; there are narrow-cobbled streets, traditional painted houses, and an imposing medieval castle. Obidos may be just a small town, but there is no better example of a traditional Portuguese town than Obidos. The best method to travel to Obidos from Lisbon is by the express bus. The bus service departs from Campo Grande bus station, which is located on the green and yellow metro line. The journey takes 1 hour ”

“Yes, the ones from Pasteis de Belém are the original ones, and yes, they are delicious! But I must say that the ones served in Manteigaria are equally worth it! ”

“Casa Piriquita offers the famous Queijada de Sintra which is what got this pastry shop started, and was propelled to success by King Carlos I. These delicious little pies have a crusty exterior and a soft inner batter made with cheese, sugar, eggs, flour and a little cinnamon. They are not too sweet and have a hint of a fresh cheese taste. Delectable!”

“Windowshopping at Padaria Ribeiro is a bit like watching a tennis match. Head goes right (“I’ll have that sausage roll”); head goes left (“oh, but that passion fruit tartlet looks so delicious”); then right (“what about that whole grain bread?”); then left (“look at those almond tarts”). And the ball keeps bouncing... One thing we can tell you: it’s all good.”

“This is the bakery that brought bolo-rei (a crowned-shaped cake decorated with dried fruit that is usually eaten around Christmas) to Portugal and it still uses the same recipe as in 1829, the year it opened. Six generations later, Confeitaria Nacional is still run by the same family, though there have been some modernisations. In the summer months, it usually organises meals and cruises on a boat/restaurant with a view on the Tagus River.”

“If you come here on the weekends especially, you will see the Porsche 911, Mercedes GT, Bentley, Maserati all parked outside. In a normal cafe, coffee will be around 1-1.20, here it is around 2 euro. Drinks and pastries are around 25-50% more but it is worth it and we are talking about a few euros more for the whole bill. The pastries are really good, great location, great cafe. ”
