NETFLIX for rainy days and access to the ROOFTOP PATIO for sunny ones :) Looking for a home full of charm and close to everything? This is for you.
*Must climb stairs. 3rd floor apartment*
If you are looking for a unique place to stay in the heart of Rouen, this is one of them. We have put a lot of love into renovating this unique space under the rooftop of our 300 year old building. This light and airy loft would have once been used to dry silk during the textile boom of the late 15th century. The apartment has a compact but charming kitchen with everything you could need to cook yourselves a meal, or enjoy a morning coffee. The kitchen windows look out over the rooftop patio, which you have access to just out your front door.
The living space is quite open, it feels like a treehouse or cabin, due to the thick oak beams running this way and that.
The main sleeping area is located up on a mezzanine accessed by a sloped ladder/stairs with hand rails. The queen sized bed is a very comfortable, low-set futon style bed.
The living area is very charming, decorated with treasures that we have hand picked from local markets, and also brand new furnishings, like the fold out couch (Intended only for children as this apartment not suitable for multiple adults). There is a wonderful vinyl music player with records which we invite you to enjoy (but also ask you to handle these with care) This player also has a Bluetooth function so that you can play your own music. The tv has access to Netflix, great for a rainy day or quiet evening in.
The bathroom is spacious, with a HUGE walk-in shower (1.4metres by 1metre) vanity, large mirror, brand new hot water system, toilet, and window.
There is a stylish and practical closet area where you can put your baggage and unpack your clothing, including drawers shelves and a hanging space.
There is a little reading nook area with a large bean bag by the front windows. Perfect for an afternoon nap.
The rooftop patio as I have already mentioned, is just out your entry door. Here you will find plants, a soft seating area with coffee table and parasol, a table with chairs. By night it is a magical little oasis, lit by tiny twinkly lights. Great for an evening wine before heading off to dinner and discovering Rouen’s gorgeous streets. Please note** This space is for listed guests only, inviting extra guests is not allowed. We also ask that you keep noise to a respectful level here ;) Smoking IS permitted on the rooftop patio, but please use ashtrays provided. The patio has shared access with our own apartment, however during your stay we give you your privacy to be able to enjoy this area. I will access this area only occasionally for maintenance reasons (to water the plants for example). Our apartment is located downstairs, so your apartment is the only apartment looking out onto the patio.
You also have access to the shared laundry on the ground floor. Here you can use both the washing machine (soap provided) and the clothes dryer.
Just a final note, we want to make sure that you are aware that to access the apartment you will need to climb stairs, the apartment is located on the third floor. Please view photos carefully.
We know that you will love this little home perched among the rooftops of this medieval city!
Also, if you ever need anything, if you have a problem or a question, don’t hesitate to ask, we will be happy to help. :)
Our street is peaceful and right next to a large and beautiful park, great for picnics and there is a nice children's playground. Also in thie park is the gorgeous Abbaye Saint Ouen, as well as the town hall. There is a bakery, supermarket, post office AND and cash machine right out the front door of the building which is very very convenient. The apartment is perfectly situated to see all the sites of Rouen. You are in a quarter that quite arty and local, so it's easier to find great places to eat and drink without getting caught in tourist traps.
Just around the corner is a fantastic little street called Rue Eau de Robec (2 minutes by foot) this street has a tiny river running its length, and is full of little restaurants and bars the whole way up. There is also everything that you could need for everyday life within walking distance, as just around the corner is Rue Armand Carrel, this is where the french locals shop for food! You will find 3 great bakeries, a wonderful cheese shop, 3 butchers, 2 pharmacies, fresh seafood, chocolate shops, a weekend market where you can find some great local produce, and just past that is another very large super market.
The weekend markets are held in Place Saint Marc (5 mins walk) Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from about 8am - 2pm. (Pssst local tip!: Friday mornings are the BEST to find an antique or unique souvenir in the flee market section, dont be afraid to barter a little. Saturdays and Sundays are a vibrant and busseling farmers market. Sundays in particular are special because you can buy some local produce like hams and cheeses and baguettes, take them to a table at one of the surrounding cafes, order a drink and eat your market food at their tables :) Remember, this is only on Sundays because the cafes do not serve food that day)
We will provide you with a small map and are happy to point out where all of the best places are ;)
For your information if you want to do some planning in advance and look them up, here are a few of our favourite bars and restaurants.
L’Espiguette - A small and very popular resto serving French cuisine (best outdoor patio in town)
Cafe l’Epoque - Traditional style French Brasserie
There are also two good noodle restaurants on Rue Eau de Robec,
Noodle Shop - Japanese style noodle
Larhman - Chinese noodles (handmade dumplings!)
For True french savory crepes (Galettes) we like - la Cornaelle on rue Eau de Robec (just around the corner from us), and La Régalière (a 15 minute walk away)
For vegan of vegetarian food, we like Bolibol. The upstairs is cosy with really nice decor. Plus the food is delicious.
La Petite Auberge- french cosy place
La Tavern Saint Amant- cosy tavern with late night food.
La Walsheim - German cuisine, great sour crout and open late!
Le Red Rooster - American style diner burger joint! But good quality
Le Trend Burger - Big good burgers with interesting options like the Normandy burger which includes camembert and apple!
L’Oritano- our favourite little Italian place in Rouen. (And one of our favs in general) Lovely people, a genius Italian in the kitchen making his family recipes. Ever changing chalk board menu full of different little plates, you’ll want to try them all. Special mention for the homemade buffala! Yuuuum!!!
CrunchyMellow- if you just feel like a slice of pizza
Fujiya Sushi- nice Japanese restaurant, 15minutes walk from the apartment.
ALSO something a bit unique to Rouen- Place Saint Marc Markets (Fri, Sat, Sun), but specifically on SUNDAY you can go there and buy up some local produce, like cheese, ham, fruit, tapenades ETC find a seat in any of the little cafes surrounding the market place, and enjoy your market food right there on their tables, you just have to order a wine or beer or coffee. Its a great place to people watch and get a sense of how the locals live.
TIP: Its a good idea to take a little wooden board/plate, and little knife with you. Just don't forget to bring them back home to our place ;)
Vixen - a funky bar where you can drink, chat, eat some hot greasy nibblies. ;) I would just like to mention the consistently good playlist here.
Chez Ginette - nibbles and bar. A bit hipster and modern.
Le Trois Pièces - A bar with three levels, so plenty of places to find a seat, live music in the basement (entry fee for the concerts)
Le Petit Bar- Tiny charming cocktail bar in 1930's style Great for an after dinner cocktail, or a date ;)
Le Saint Maclou - Lively and local. Family run, cosy bar. Often kitch French pop music is playing... and often french people singing and dancing along to said music! :) It's fantastic ;)
La Fée Torchette - Cocktails, and party atmosphere. Open later than most places, busy when it gets late.
Brazil - Great for a summer drink on the terrace.
Le Petit Verdot - Wine and cheese tasting plate anyone?
Station Service- A place with good coffee and an all day cooked breakfast!
Couleur Cafe- Good coffee (including lattes and cappuccinos) huge tea list. Cosy for a winters day, and has a nice terrace for when it’s sunny.
Citizen- Great coffee. Closed sundays.
Cafe L’Époque- Also mentioned in the restaurant section, but this is a nice place for a morning coffee, pick up a croissant or something in the boulangerie next door and sit down for a coffee in the Belle Époque. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time and traveled to Paris too! ;)
Dame Cakes- if you like large tea cups, tasty cakes, and frills, this is the tea-house for you. (Its even just worth a look at the exterior of the building, very pretty)
Le 106 - a great live music venue with a bar, located across the river in an old shipping warehouse. International line up, check their website for current concerts and ticket availability. (You can also buy tickets at the FNAC)
La Trois Piece- A bar with intimate live concerts downstairs, just up the street from the apartment.
