History Museum
“Established in the 18th century, since 1988 the museum is located in the headquarters of Villa Landolina and is dedicated to the great archaeologist Paolo Orsi, who carried out the main studies on the city. The Archaeological Museum "Paolo Orsi" collects the most important documentation of prehistory, the protohistory of Sicily and famous works of Greek and Roman art, ceramics, marbles, architectural decorations. The oldest finds range from the Paleolithic to the Bronze Age; notable objects that testify to The Egee, Anatolian and Mycenaean influences. Precious are the kits of the Greek-Sicule necropolis, the ceramic material, the dense reliefs, the archaic statues. Gemma of the Museum is the "Venus anadiomene", called Venus Landolina after her discoverer, a statue of Roman-Hellenistic invoice. The material also comes from excavations of the many Greek colonies of Sicily, from Megara Hyblea, to Eloro, Akrai, Kasmenai, Kamarina and from numerous Hellenized indigenous centers. Since 2010 it is also open to the public...”

“The Zisa palace (from the Arabic al-Azīz, or “the splendid”) was outside the walls of the ancient town of Palermo, inside the Genoardo (from the Arabic Jannat al-ar or “garden or paradise on the earth”) of which it is the most important and representative monument. With its building peculiarities and its crystalline forms, it refracts the lights of the ifriqena architecture and constitutes the best preserved model of the Arab-Norman architecture. William I began to build it in 1165 and his successor William II completed it. To enrich the palace is the Sala della Fontana located on the ground floor of the building, embellished with profane mosaics and muqarnas vaults. In addition to the fishing pond in front of the complex, there was also a coeval small and precious chapel.”

“ The regional Archaeological Museum is one of the most modern museums in Sicily and contains important archeological finds from the provinces of Agrigento and Caltanissetta dating from prehistoric to Roman times. Among the collections are finds from the Neolithic, Bronze, and Iron Ages and ancient finds from Gela and the necropolis at Montelusa, the oldest known graves in the area. Highlights to look for include a fifth-century-BC red-figured Greek crater from Gela showing an Amazon battle, black- and red-figured pottery from Athens and Italy dating from the sixth to third centuries BC, capitals and gargoyles with lion's heads from various temples, and the marble statue of an ephebe from about 480 BC. An entire two-story room is devoted to the buildings of the enormous temple of the Olympian Zeus, with a model and reconstruction drawings and one of the original 38 Atlas figures, the head of another Atlas, and other fragments.”

“Isola Bella is a gorgeous pebbled beach which includes an islet of the same name. Isola Bella, known as the Pearl of the Ionian Sea, is considered the most charming and gorgeous beach of the district of Messina. Placed close at the foot of the town, the bay has a pebbled beach, but the most important attraction is the islet of the same name located in front of the beach characterised by a lush vegetation. The islet is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of beach which is covered by water at high tide. Water is blue and clear, full of spectacular marine flora and a fascinating seabed.”

“The Greek Theatre of Taormina is the most fascinating historical monument of the “pearl of the Ionian Sea”. It is one of the world’s most popular tourist attractions, so that Johann Wolfgang Goethe in his famous “Journey to Italy” wrote: “No theater audience has never had such a sight in front of him.” The greek-Roman theater is divided into three parts: the scene, the orchestra and the auditorium. The scene, which is in front of the auditorium, is the place where the actors acted. According to the experts’ reconstruction, this part was decorated with two rows of columns, one facing the other. The scene has also three large arched openings at a symmetric distance one another, and six niches placed three on the right and three on the left of the central arch. On the scene there are the remains of six column bases and four Corinthian columns that were raised after 1860. The auditorium is formed by a series of steps starting from the bottom and climbing upward, spreading up to the summit, where spectators were seated. The orchestra is the lowest level of the whole theatre. This space was intended for musicians who played during the performance. Dug directly in the hard rock of Mount Tauro, in the third century BC, it could accommodate thousands of sitting spectators. It is known that the Greeks architects used to build their most important buildings as if Nature could be part of them. The natural scenery was integrated with the architecture of the theatre, like light and air insinuated between the columns of a greek temple. The theatre shape could allow a perfect listening from any area of the auditorium. In the late imperial period, the theatre was adapted for gladiatorial games. With the fall of the West then, everything came to a end. The marbles were removed and so the monumental columns. Only after the end of the war, some sections of the original construction were completed by a great work of restoration.”

“The Cathedral of Monreale, founded by William II in 1172 and dedicated to Santa Maria Nuova houses the largest mosaic decoration (over 6,000 square meters) of the entire production of the Mediterranean basin, performed by Byzantine workers, with vetero stories and new Testamentaries and the Christ Pantocrator in the apse. The plant, like the great Cistercian and Cluniac Romanesque cathedrals, follows the model of the Cathedral of Cefalù. The use of bichrome inlays in lava stone, recessed niches with rings, braided arches and chevron enriches the walls of the external façades and the apses, highlighting the architectural ribs. On the right side of the presbytery, there are the sarcophagus in porphyry of Guglielmo I and the marble one of Guglielmo II. The Cathedral is next to the cloister of the ancient Benedictine monastery characterized by arcades with ogival arches with double arches, supported by twin columns, alternately decorated with mosaics. The sculptural plastic of the capitals, engraved with biblical scenes, is a surprising and original example of Romanesque-Mediterranean art, where there is a mixture of formal and ornamental elements with a classic flavor and Gothic elements of Provençal taste.”
