NEIGHBORHOODS/VILLAGES

The Guadalupe District, a charming bungalow neighborhood a few blocks west of the Plaza, boasts some of the city’s most interesting independently owned shopping options; a stroll along Guadalupe Street and its side streets reveals cute boutiques, record/book stores, and restaurants. The neighborhood is also the site of Santa Fe’s contemporary urban-renewal project, the Railyard District, which boasts nuanced, eco-conscious architecture, a 10-acre park with a bike path, plenty of walking trails and picnic tables, and a broad plaza alongside the tracks of the Rail Runner commuter train. Both the highly regarded Santa Fe Farmers’ Market and Second Street Brewery at the Railyard.

RESTAURANTS

La Boca has the feel of a lively European wine bar, featuring an extensive selection of carefully chosen Mediterranean and South American wines. Chef Caruso's Modern Spanish Cuisine is inspired by the exuberance of Spanish cooking combined with fresh, local ingredients. La Boca has been called "the most influential restaurant in Santa Fe" by the Pasatiempo Magazine and the New York Times describes the menu as " modern re-inventions of classic Spanish cuisine."

Get your fix of New Mexico enchiladas, sopaipillas, carne adovada and chile rellenos, some great margaritas. If you want to make your kids very happy order a freshly made sopaipilla with ice cream and strawberry sauce. Tomasita’s Santa Fe resides in the 100 year old red brick building that was once home to the famous Chile Line. Between 1870 and 1880 when the Wild West was being tamed, Railroads became the great connectors.

Housed in a restored 250-year-old landmark adobe building, Santa Fe's Geronimo offers robust Southwestern-spiked global fusion fare in a stunning and cozy space. The interior is like a Georgia O’Keeffe painting come to life, with its wood-burning, cove-style fireplace, tall chocolate-and-garnet-leather seating, wood beams and local Native American-style artwork decorating the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star restaurant’s walls. The food is equally remarkable, fusing the distinct culinary influences of Asia, the Southwest and the Mediterranean into a “global eclectic” menu that executive chef Sllin Cruz changes with the seasons. Vibrant flavors, bright colors and top-notch regional ingredients come together in delightful dishes such as Maryland soft-shell tempura crabs with soba noodle and Asian pear salad. And if there should ever come a time when you’d like to share your honey grilled prawns or elk tenderloin with others, Geronimo provides several private rooms for functions of various sizes. Tasting menus of four, five and six courses can be prepared so everyone can get the full culinary experience from one of the city's finest addresses.

DRINKS

The Draft Station, next to the Five & Dime, is a good bet for families. Try to snag a table on the upstairs balcony, order one of the local beers on the menu along with one if Draft’s gourment pizza. Then send the kids downstairs to play air hockey, table tennis and foosball while you wait for your pies to come.

The Shedd, just east of the Plaza on Palace Street, charming hidden patio. It’s popular for its good food and fun décor. You can't miss the shed's colorful sign. The outside patio has twinkling lights, a nice tree and benches if you’re just there for drinks. Inside the rooms are painted colors as bright as the pink cactus-pear margaritas we ordered. The cocktails are great and reasonably priced. The food looked good. If you want to eat there with kids I recommend arriving before 6:00 to minimize your waiting. If you do have to wait, a nice jewelry store and a Christmas ornament store share the patio and make for fun browsing.

SHOPPING

Find authentic and genuine handmade Native American jewelry made by some of the best artisans. Dating back to 1610, the Palace is the oldest public building in continuous use constructed by European settlers in the continental United States. Built by the Spanish for colonial administration, the structure has been extensively modified over the centuries to meet changing needs and stylistic interests. In addition to Spanish colonial life, the Palace has associations with the Pueblo Revolt (1680–1692), a brief period of Mexican rule (1821–1848), settlement as an American territory (1848–1912), and statehood for New Mexico (1912–present).

You have to plan ahead if you want to visit the by-appointment-only showroom of Santa Fe Vintage—but it’s worth it. Located in an industrial park about 20 minutes from downtown Santa Fe, the space houses one of the best Americana collections in the country. (Even Hollywood costumers and big-name Japanese designers seek it out.) Owner Scott Corey travels the world to scout his wares, which are organized loosely by category: WWII military gear over here, rare denim and rock tees over there. While it’s easy to get sidetracked by the gold-rimmed aviator sunglasses or flowy Gunne Sax gowns, head for the wall hung with vintage indigo mud cloths hand-dyed in Mali. The faded blue-and-white patterns are so striking, the fabric so perfectly worn in, and the cut so versatile, you’ll want to wear them as a scarf, wrap, and a sarong. Bonus: The textile doubles as a tablecloth or handsome wall hanging.
