The dams, reservoirs and 73 mile aqueduct of the Elan Valley were built a hundred years ago to supply clean water to Birmingham, in an area of outstanding scenic beauty.
Open year-round for our visitors to enjoy, the Elan Valley safeguards the natural habitats of numerous species of flora and fauna.
Walk or drive along the valley, or try bike hire from the visitor centre. There's a café at the visitor centre and also the Penbont tea rooms near the Pen y Garreg dam.

Afon Hafren is the Welsh name for the River Severn. It’s source is a peat bog on the side of Plynlimon, but it quickly becomes a torrent with falls and cascades plunging through Hafren Forest, around 8 miles for Wye View.
There are a number of marked walks through the forest:
The Cascades Walk is 1/2 mile and is wheelchair accessible by means of a boardwalk.
The Severn-Break-its-Neck Trail is 1.5 miles and leads to the Severn Break its Neck waterfall.
The Blaen Hafren Falls Trail is 3.5 miles and follows the Severn to Blaenhafren Falls.
The Source of the Severn Trail is 8 miles long and leads to the source of the river on the side of Plynlimon.
In addition, The Severn Way, The Wye Valley Walk, Glyndŵr’s Way and the Sarn Sabrina walk all pass through the Hafren Forest.

Bryntail is the site of a nineteenth century lead mine and associated ore processing buildings. Although long abandoned and ruined, the remains of the mine shafts, pits for the winding gear and settling tanks used in the processing of the ore are all clearly visible. Bryntail is in the care of Cadw and lies on the Glyndwr’s Way walk.

Bryntail Lead Mine Buildings
Bryntail is the site of a nineteenth century lead mine and associated ore processing buildings. Although long abandoned and ruined, the remains of the mine shafts, pits for the winding gear and settling tanks used in the processing of the ore are all clearly visible. Bryntail is in the care of Cadw and lies on the Glyndwr’s Way walk.

The dam is used to regulate flow of water down the river and into the Severn. Occasionally the water overflows the top of the dam forming a spectacular backdrop to the Bryntail lead mine at its foot.

The Clywedog river is dammed high above Llanidloes forming a large reservoir popular with anglers and the local sailing club. The dam is used to regulate flow of water down the river and into the Severn. Occasionally the water overflows the top of the dam forming a spectacular backdrop to the Bryntail lead mine at its foot.
Opened in 1902, this narrow gauge steam railway offers the scenic trip from Aberystwyth through ancient woodlands to Devil’s Bridge, home of the famous waterfalls, high in the Cambrian Mountains.
The railway is mostly single track and is 12 miles long. Journey time is approximately one hour. There are two working steam engines originally built in the 1920s and restored in the railway’s own workshops at Aberystwyth station. Rolling stock incudes both compartment carriages and open sided carriages.
There’s a shop selling a variety of railway merchandise plus confectionary and hot & cold drinks at Aberystwyth station. At Devil’s Bridge station the Two Hoots cafe has hot and cold food options.
The Devil’s Bridge station is a 400 metres from the waterfalls and the Hafod Hotel. Just opposite the station entrance you can find Sarah Bunton’s handmade chocolate shop.
