Local hiking

This category includes short descriptions of local hikes.
Heybrook lookout is about a mile long hike accessible right off of Hwy2. No parking pass is required, during hiking season the parking lot fills up fast, however, it does not take long for a parking spot to become available. It takes about 30-45 minutes one way. Top of the trail features a tall wood built fire lookout tower that offers hikers wonderful 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains. A small trail heading east from the lookout structure will lead you to a composting toilet placed hidden in the forest. Recharge Chalet is located in a spectacular spot and offers "private" access to alternative trailhead to reach Heybrook lookout on a longer, however much less steep and very private forest service road. Grab our hiking poles from the utility room, water bottle from the fridge, snacks from our snack basket, leave your car charging in our driveway and head just over the railroad tracks to a forest service road that will take you to Heybrook.......

About a 2.5 mile hike one way on a well groomed trail gets you to Bridal veil falls in about an hour. Right before the falls you will gain some elevation through stairway trails but it is a nice easy-ish hike. Parking lot is big but fills up quickly NW forest parking pass is required. Just before the falls the trail splits and you can choose to go up (right) to the falls or continue straight (left) for another about 2 miles to reach Lake Serene (pretty strenuous elevation gain hike)

Barkley lake trail is a nice hike to lots of nice hangouts and camping spots on the Alpine lake. Access is via Forest service road 6024 right across the Baring general store. NW forest service pass is required. To get to trailhead takes about forever on a 4 mile long deeply potholed forest service road but the hike itself is nice and lake is beautiful, surrounded by 1000ft cliffs.

Lake Serene is GORGEOUS! Accessible via same trail as Bridal veil falls just before the Index bridge off of hwy 2. Parking lot is huge but fills up fast as this is a very popular hiking spot. Trail is nice and easy about 2 miles (about an hour) to just bellow Bridal veil falls. There it splits off and you stay to the left for another 2ish miles (2 hours ish) which becomes quite the workout and elevation gainer. Zig Zag up a steep hillside pretty much up to the lake. Just before the lake there is a composting toilet with a view of the trail. Lake is GORGEOUS! continue across the walk bridge and to the right for valley view or straight up a hill a bit to "lunch rock" where the view could not get any better.
