Tyneham old , historic deserted village was occupied by Allied Forces in 1943. The 225 villagers were given 28 days notice to evacuate their homes. The village has been deserted since then. The area was needed for military training but after the war, the villagers were not allowed to return. Some of the original buildings can still be seen. The church and school have been restored. There is also a lovely walk down to Tyneham Bay.

Getting around
From the Cottage, turn left outside the white gate. After walking 50 yds, turn left again , walk up the lane and you will see a five bar gate into the field. From there you can see the Castle and the church on your left. You can walk down across the field to the village and the castle. Alternatively, you can turn right outside the Cottage gate and walk down the main road to the village centre. Entrance to the Castle is just by the National Trust shop. There are four very good Pubs around the village. ( one being The Castle Inn opposite the Cottage). They all have lovely gardens .
