Sightseeing

People have been worshiping at Ripon cathedral for over 1350 years. Founded as a monastery in 660ad by Scottish monks, it was refounded as Benediction by St Wilfrid in 672 and he is now buried near the High Altar. One of the misericords was reputed to be the inspiration of Alice through the Looking Glass for Lewis Caroll who was a canon here. Free to enter, it is a magnificent building not to be missed.

One of the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercian Abbeys in the country, it was one of the wealthiest monasteries before being 'dissolved' by Henry VIII in 1539. It is set in a stunning valley straddling the river Skell. The front of the Abbey forms a natural amphitheatre, perfect for the events which are presented throughout the summer months. One can follow the ancient route from Fountains Abbey through the 7 bridges Valley into Studley Water Gardens and retrace pilgrims footsteps as they made their meandering way to Ripon cathedral.

Parks & Nature

To the rear of Grewelthorpe, are the hidden wildly dramatic Hackfall Woods. Set in a deep gorge encompassing the river Ure, the natural beauty of the valley has been enhanced by the dramatic constructions of William Aislabie, engineer and imagineer. In 1750, he built a number of historical follies, linked them by vistas and walkways where straight-laced Victorian ladies could perambulate with butlers and hampers feeling they were communing with the wilderness. Even today, these walkways and vistas, recently restored, have lost none of their dramatic beauty and should not be missed, especially in the spring where the bluebells present a blazing blue carpet to the aroma of wild garlic.
