The absolute experience for those that can dive very well while snorkelling is to enter in the Katafygi cave. You MUST know what you are doing! To enter you must dive 4 meters in depth and then continue in an underwater horizontal tunnel for another 5 meters. The cave is unspoiled and continues by walking for at least 3.5 km. The beach is with 'laser cut' moonlike rocks. Perfect. Not for little kids

Two sandy beaches. The first one organised with umbrellas, bar and taverna. The second one, the unorganised, is so much more beautiful and is always like a lake with no waves even when the first one can have 2 meter waves. Trully unspoiled. Needs 10 minutes walking but it worths it. You can enjoy the sunset

The Viros Gorge is a sublime experience. Descending from the foot of Profitis Ilias it disgorges itself into the sea at Kardamili. 4 hours to descent to Kardamyli where you should eat something. Don't do it if it rains

To return to Athens i sugest, if you have not already done so, to drive from Oitylo to Kalamata sightseeing Exo-Outer Mani You can stop: 1. For swimming to Kalogria. Touristic but beautiful. Don't miss to enter in the water at the right side of the beach where the rocks begins. The water there comes from inside the Taygetos mountain and is SO cold. Absolutely refreshing. 2. For eating to Kardamyli. Don't forget to visit also old Kardamyli

Mystras occupies a steep foothill on the northern slopes of Mt. Taygetos, 6km. NW of Sparta. The castle on the top of the hill was founded in 1249 by the Frankish leader William II de Villeharduin. After 1262 it came under Byzantine control, and at the middle of the 14th century became the seat of the Despotate of Moreas. In 1448 the last emperor of Byzantium, Constantine XI Palaeologos, was crowned at Mystras. In 1460 the hill was captured by the Turks and in 1464 Sigismondo Malatesta of Rimini managed to capture the city but not the castle. For a short period Mystras came under the control of the Venetians (1687-1715) but was again taken over by the Turks. It was one of the first castles of Greece to be liberated in 1821. The foundation of modern Sparta by king Otto in 1834 marked the end of the old town's life.
