Sacro Monte di Varese located in Varese, in the Santa Maria del Monte hamlet, consists of fourteen chapels, dedicated to the mysteries of the Rosary, which lead to the sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte, a place of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages, which serves as the fifteenth chapel.
The works began in 1604, along the two kilometers of a wide cobbled path. Thanks to generous donations, the construction was much faster than that of other sacred mountains, and thirteen chapels were completed by 1623. The statues and frescoes that adorn them as a whole constitute a high testimony of the seventeenth-century sacred art in the area. Milanese.

It borders to the north and west on the Cuvia Valley, to the east on the Ganna Valley, and to the south on the state road from Laveno Mombello to Varese, the perfect departure point for a visit to the Park.
The Park owes its beauty to the rich variety of plant and animal life it contains. The woods abound in beech, chestnut, ash, lime and maple; orchids and gentians bloom in the meadows. The fauna includes different species of birds of prey such as black kite, honey buzzard, common buzzard, sparrowhawk, peregrine falcon and short-toed eagle, as well as more common animals like red deer, roe deer, and bat.
The Park also contains some natural “monuments” such as the “Fonte del Ceppo”, a spring of carsic origin, and the “Marmitte dei giganti”, sculpted rocks formed by the abrasive action of the River Vellone. Carsic phenomena are a feature of the Park, which numbers more than 130 underground caves.

From Ferrera di Varese it is a short walk to a scenic spot where the river Margorabbia jumps into a really wonderful pool, the perfect place to swim. Parking is possible at the school in Via Battisti (gps 45.934755, 8.786328). There are signs “cascata” pointing to the small parking. From here it is less then a 5 minute walk to a small waterfall. From here it is a short walk to the bigger waterfall.

It was built to the designs of the architect Bianchi in the second half of the eighteenth century. The “Salone Estense” (Estense Hall) with its large fireplace made from multicoloured marble is quite stunning. Palazzo Estense is now the Town Hall.
Behind the palace are the Estensi Gardens, one of the most charming public parks in Italy, which were built in the same style as the gardens of the Schönbrunn Palace, in Vienna, and finished in 1787.
