Welcome to Astoria!

Sightseeing

Offering impressive views of the whole area, and worth the $5 entrance fee for cars. Alternatively, you can hike all the way to the column from our house using some (kind of secret) trails. Ask us how!

Learn all about the "Graveyard of the Pacific" and Astoria's past and current communities of fishermen/women, shipping barges, and the Coast Guard. Totally worth the admission fee; plan for 2-3 hours at least.

One of the best small State Parks around (and there are a few!) You can: catch some waves at the beach; check out the remains of an historic ship wreck; enjoy a tranquil walk around a peaceful lake (in addition to swimming & boating); wander through a forest or enjoy a bbq! $5 daily use fee and located about 20-25 mins away.

The Flavel House Museum is worth a trip; the restored Victorian house is a highlight of Astoria's settler history. (pro-tip: avoid the much-hyped but disappointing "Oregon Film Museum." It's not worth the entrance fee, but you can watch the Goonies and Kindergarten Cop from our DVD collection!)

Food scene

The nearest coffee shop is definitely the most interesting. Found at the end of Pier 39 (you can drive on the pier, just be sure to have only one car at a time, as it's narrow) in the historic Cannery building. Learn about Astoria's fishing legacy while having some tasty coffee!

Is this *really* the best fish & chips? Should I *really* wait in that long line? Yes, yes it is. And you definitely should. Fish and chips are the only thing they serve out of this modified former fishing boat, and it's well worth the wait (even in the wind and rain).

Local Businesses

The community-owned co-op grocery store just opened a new location within walking distance to our place! We love the co-op for its bulk section, local meats & produce, and tasty taco bar.

The Sunday Market (May - Oct) is a must-do!

Be sure to check out the food trucks and live music, as well as the big flower arrangement booth (you won't believe the prices). We also recommend the honey and jams and goat cheese, made by farmers in the area! One of Astoria's best artists has a booth here every Sunday; be sure to wander by his booth and take a bit of Astoria-themed art home with you.

Bring layers and shoes that are fine in the mud

We love the rainy climate! We recommend having a rain jacket (they're better than umbrellas and will keep you dryer) and shoes that are fine in the wet and mud.

Hike Up to the Astoria Column

You can drive up to the Column and park for $5, easy peasy. You can *also* park at the Cathedral Tree Trailhead on Irving & 29th (for free) and hike the two-ish miles up to the tree, and then further on to the Column. (or, if you stay at our guest suite, you can hike from our house! ask us how...) It's one of our favorite forest hikes. Once at the Column, climb the 164 steps up the Column to the observation deck (if you're up for it). Either way, you'll be treated to some of the best views of the area!

Skip the chain restaurants

For being such a small town, Astoria really has it going on food-wise. While we do have a few chain restaurants, we highly recommend checking out the local spots. There's something for everyone and it's a great way to get a real vibe of Astoria.
