Fred's is the heart of the mountain. It's a wonderful general mercantile, with creaky wooden floors, and a great selection. There have been many a weekend when I feel tired after arriving on Beech, and I never leave the mountain because Fred's has everything I need. They also have DVDs available to rent for $1. Check out the sporting goods and the home decor they sell upstairs. There is also a great little deli open for breakfast an lunch below the mercantile. Fred was twice mayor of the mountain, and has been a huge part of developing this lovely little town.

This is my favorite antique store in the area. They have some fantastic finds, and take old items and turn them into lamps. For my daughter's 15th birthday, I surprised her with a lamp they made from an old rotary phone. She loves it!
