My recommendation for a quick tour of the area is to rent a car and drive up north along Mission Blvd. Take a left on La Jolla Blvd and in a few miles turn left on to Palomar Ave. Follow the road along the coastline for half a mile.
Turn right on to Nautilus St. and follow the road all the way up the hill. Make a left on La Jolla Scenic Dr and head straight to Mt Soledad Veteran's Memorial.
From here you'll have a good view of the city.
You can then take La Jolla Scenic Dr all the way back down to Mission Blvd.
