Sesimbra is located just 40 kms from Lisbon center and is one of the most beautiful fishing villages in Portugal.

Must see in Sesimbra
Sesimbra’s Castle is the last of the Portuguese castles on the sea to maintain the medieval design. It was classified as a National Monument in 1910 and brings together several reasons of interest. It is possible to walk along it’s walls and admire the unique views over the Sesimbra town and the sea.
Inside there are two permanent exhibitions about the castle’s history, a heritage interpretation center, a church and a disabled cemetery. It also offers a museum circuit that allows the visitor to independently enjoy the various points of interest of the Castle.

Castelo
Sesimbra’s Castle is the last of the Portuguese castles on the sea to maintain the medieval design. It was classified as a National Monument in 1910 and brings together several reasons of interest. It was built 365 years ago at a time when danger came from the sea and as maritime boundaries had to be defended, it was meticulously restored in 2014 so visitors can understand the original functions of each space, from the storerooms area to the Governor's house, through the dormitories, giving you an idea of how these fortifications worked. It is a cultural space that helps different kinds of events like exhibitions, musical performances. It also contains Sesimbra’s Maritime Museum.
It is a symbol of Sesimbra, in a true house of culture and a mandatory point of passage for all who visit us. The view of the beach, the town and the harbor, make it a place of choice to contemplate Sesimbra.
SESIMBRA'S MARITIME MUSEUM
The museum exhibits a rich heritage linked to the sea and fishing, largely the result of working closely with the fishing community. A 5000 year old anchor stock associated with navigation in the Roman period and a set of hooks and net weights dated between 2500 and 200 BC are the oldest artifacts in exhibition, and transport the visitor back in time to meet the various peoples who passed through the territory, as well as their strong relationship with the sea.
How Sesimbra’s fishermen travelled, their devotion to the sea and seafaring, the various fishing gear, the Parque Marítimo and King D. Carlos are some of the subject areas that occupy the various areas of the site. Many of the exhibits were provided by Sesimbra fishermen or their families and belonged to vessels or fishing stores. Some of the models were made by local authors, and much of the available information was compiled and worked in collaboration with our seamen, people of immense knowledge. Furthermore, using new technologies you can query a database about our fishermen, their main fishing routes and fishing grounds.
The museum is divided into themes that occupy several areas of the Santiago Fortress, an emblematic building, also connected to the sea, which through this model becomes an "exhibit" of the Museum itself.
The reception is located next to the Tourist Office at the monument entrance. After purchasing the ticket and being informed about the context, visitors can circulate through the various areas and choose how best to organize their own visit.
A year after opening its doors, the Sesimbra Maritime Museum received an honorable mention and two awards from the Portuguese Museology Association at the Museum of the Year Awards, thus recognizing the work carried out by the City Council, in partnership with the fishing community, which greatly contributed to making this museum a reality.

Convento de Santa Maria da Arrábida

Lagoa Pequena and Cabo Espichel are two special Protection Areas for birds which are increasingly sought after by photographers, biologists, ornithologists and birdwatching enthusiasts.
Included in birdwatching tours, the Lagoa Pequena is one of the largest wetlands of Portugal and one of the five most important sites in Europe of movement between nesting areas for several species.
In the area there is an Interpretative Site composed of circuits and observatories that allow close watch of some of the most beautiful birds that exist in our country, such as the Purple Swamphen, the Mallard, the Purple Heron and the Great Tit. In the area of Cabo Espichel, characterized by high cliffs and a land area of open fields and forests, migratory passage species can be observed as well as bird species that nest on the cliffs, such as the Peregrine Falcon.
The area has several observatories and walkways that make walking along the margins more comfortable. In the reception room, where technicians from the Society for the Study of Birds or the City Council are permanently available, information is provided about bird watching and there is a chart identifying the species that can be found in the area at any given time. There are also available for sale various items about birds, including the European Bird Guide. For those who don’t have binoculars, these can be rented for 1 Euro.
For children there is an observation kit, consisting of a backpack with several items that will be useful during the visit.
We recommend to book a Guided Tour (2h duration) so you can really make the most of your visit, they cost just 5€ per person, it's free for children up to 6 years old.
It's necessary to book at least 2days in advance.

Lighthouse of Cabo Espichel
For centuries the Portuguese coast was known by foreign vessels, especially the British, as the "black coast" because there was no lighting system to help navigation. In the late eighteenth century, the Marquis of Pombal built a network of lighthouses to make it safer, including the one on Cabo Espichel, one of oldest in Portugal, built in 1790.
Over two hundred years later, the Lighthouse is still in operation and additionally represents a true symbol of Cabo Espichel. Open to the public once a week, on the initiative of the Portuguese Navy, it is a way of telling the story of the place and attesting to our relationship with the sea.
Admiring the landscape from the 32 meter high tower is, in itself, a unique experience that is worth the 135 stone and 15 iron steps that you need to climb to get there, but along the route there is much more to discover.
At an altitude of 168 meters above sea level, the Lighthouse of Cabo Espichel has a luminous range of 26 miles, approximately 48 kilometers, and produces a white light that every 12 seconds emits three flashes. The optical apparatus smaller than the original, also comprises air/sea panels which emit light not only to the horizon, but also to the sky.
In the tower one can still see the equipment that operated by means of a vapourized oil burner, which in 1883 replaced the Argand lamps, fueled by oil, and the old watch system, which in case of failure of the engines, is ready for action .
In the late nineteenth century it received its first sound signal, a mechanically operated bell that later, with the arrival of electricity, was replaced by an air siren which, although deactivated, can still be seen on site. The equipment became fully autonomous in 1989.
Despite all the existing electronic aid to navigation, the light of the lighthouse is still precious to those at sea. The Sesimbra fishermen are guided not only by the light but by the building itself. With the visual and sound technological advances that have occurred over the decades, the routine of the lighthouse keepers has also changed. However, just as the light of the lighthouse, their presence is also indispensable, not only in case of malfunction but also to care for its upkeep.
Since 2011, along with 29 other buildings owned by the Navy, the lighthouse of Cabo Espichel has been open to the public once a week for tours, which explain the mission of the lighthouses and the work of lighthouse keepers, revealing to the public a very valuable cultural and historical heritage.

With a century of history, Sampaio Milling is a milestone in the industrial and technological development of the municipality. A white rectangular building with reddish doors, it was initially used as stable and later adapted for milling grain which arrived from all over the region.
Inside it is possible to recall areas that once corresponded to the grinding room, sales, offices, storage and equipment. Outside there are traces of its golden age of operation like the water cooling tank for the engine, and a place for weighing and selling the flours produced.
In the late 40s, the site became a coffee roasting facility until it reached its decline in the 90s. To preserve this important testimony of the municipality’s technological and industrial development, the City Council began its recovery at the end of 2008.
One of its key elements is the Hornsby-Stockport engine, installed in the building around 1917. The apparatus consists of a set of rare, original and unique accessories that make it an invaluable asset. The history of the building, the operation of the internal circuits, the life of mills, from prehistoric times to the large industrial mills, and the bread cycle are amongst the topics the public will learn about at Sampaio Milling, which has been transformed into a museum dedicated to the rural life of the municipality.

There you can rent bikes, kayaks, stand up paddles, diving equipment, book a boat trip, among other interesting and more or less radical adventures.

Praia da Califórnia is located in the eastern part of the Bay of Sesimbra, and generally presents a very calm sea and a long sandy extension. The clear blue water is very hard to resist despite the water temperature that is usually around 19ºC.

A beach for adventure “professionals”. To get there you have to have a jeep, or a mountain bike or a physical condition worthy of a “professional” hiker. To go down to the small beach you have narrow trails and a… rope! A real adventure!
