Florence might be our favorite coastal town (though probably tied with Newport). Explore Florence's Old Town area which is full of great restaurants and shops. Florence also offers horseback riding, dune buggy tours, the sea lion caves, whale watching, light houses, sandboarding, and a variety of beaches.

Beautifully maintained gardens on a historic lumber-baron's estate on cliffs overlooking the ocean. Shore Acres features a formal garden inspired by the original, with plants and flowers from all over the world. Visitors find a Japanese-style garden with lily pond and two carefully curated rose gardens that include All-American Rose Selections. Something is in bloom almost every day of the year: the first spring bulbs pop up in late February; rhododendrons and azaleas soon follow; roses bloom through the summer; and dahlias appear August through mid-October.

Cape Arago may be the end of the road (the road out of Coos Bay goes no further), but it's really only the beginning of your south coast exploration. Located at the end of Cape Arago Highway about 15 miles southwest of Coos Bay, Cape Arago is a scenic headland jutting into the Pacific Ocean. Long used by native Americans, Cape Arago was first sighted by Europeans during one of Sir Francis Drake's expeditions in the late 1500s. Modern visitors can scan the horizon for migrating whales and other marine mammals, as well as fishing boats and ships entering and leaving nearby Coos Bay. The south cove trail leads down to a sandy beach and superior tidepools where you can visit intertidal plants and animals (but please enjoy them with your eyes only). The north cove trail provides access for fishing, beachcombing, and viewing the off-shore colonies of seals and sea lions at Shell Island -- a designated National Wildlife Refuge. The trail is closed March 1- June 30 to protect seal pups. Picnic tables, restrooms and a gazebo shelter are available for daytime use.

From nearly every viewpoint on the Oregon coast, colossal rocks can be seen jutting out of the Pacific Ocean, stark monoliths amidst a pounding surf. Established on May 6, 1935, as a refuge and breeding ground for seabirds and marine mammals, the scenic and rugged Oregon Islands Refuge includes 1,853 rocks, reefs, and islands and stretches from Tillamook Head near Seaside south to the California border. All of the rocks and islands of the refuge are designated National Wilderness Areas, with the exception of 1-acre Tillamook Rock. Most of Oregon’s estimated 1.2 million nesting seabirds use Oregon Islands Refuge as a place to raise their young, and Oregon’s seals and sea lions use the islands as a place to haul out and rest or to give birth to their pups. The refuge also protects two headlands: Coquille Point and Crook Point. The 19-acre Coquille Point, acquired in 1991, is located on the western edge of the city of Bandon. The headland provides a buffer zone between mainland development and the islands. It is a spectacular place to watch seabirds and harbor seals and serves as a gateway to Bandon's beach. A paved trail winds over the headland and features interpretive panels that share stories about the area's wildlife.

Like any other wildlife, the elk have a mind of their own and come and go as they please. However, quite often large herds of elk can be seen grazing in this large grassland along highway 101 just north of Reedsport. They are not fond of the hot midday and more often can be seen in the earlier hours or toward the end of the day. The viewing area has a parking lot and benches, where visitors can sit and watch the elk graze or simply resting in the field. The herds consist mostly of female cows and younger elk; however, large magestic bulls with magnificent antlers are often seen watching over the herd. They are a magnificent sight!
