guide to the neighborhood

a brief description of the Kalsa district
The district, built during the Islamic domination, was the fortified citadel where the emir and his ministers lived and still retains its name (al halisah, the elect, the pure). Even today there is a particular oriental atmosphere accentuated by the presence of monuments in the Arab-Norman style. Central but popular district, it offers a glimpse of Palermo life. It is not uncommon in fact, passing in front of the church of S. Teresa. find men intent on cooking and selling babbaluci, small snails marinated with oil, parsley, garlic and pepper and served in "walking" bags. The heart of the neighborhood is around the Kalsa square, but the area extends up to Corso Vittorio Emanuele, including many of the most interesting monuments of the city. The heart of the neighborhood The entrance seems to consist of the Porta dei Greci, beyond which you enter the square overlooked by S. Teresa alla Kalsa, a monumental Baroque church built between 1686 and 1706 with a façade on two orders marked by Corinthian columns. by Paolo Amato. By the same architect is also S. Maria della Pietà (continuing in via Torremuzza) inside which there is a beautiful closing of the choir in the shape of a rising sun (part intended for the Dominican cloistered nuns, founders of the church). Via Alloro - It was the main street of the district in the Middle Ages. Unfortunately today the elegant buildings that overlooked it have been destroyed or are very much ruined. Among the survivors there are Palazzo Abatellis and the beautiful Chiesa della Gancia, adjacent to the palace.

A shop that is almost also a monument, certainly a piece of Palermo's history and typicality. This is the realm of dried fruit and vegetables: a shop that smells of antiquity, with goods displayed and offered in huge baskets and jute sacks, sold by weight and with prices clearly displayed. Staff are knowledgeable and available for advice: at first you are struck by the variety of products and the rustic and simple typicality of the place; then you recover and realise that you cannot leave without having bought something, even if in reality you had only stopped here to browse

Palazzo Mirto was the Palermo home of the ancient and noble Filangeri family for four centuries. The first floor, or piano nobile, presents a sequence of sumptuously furnished rooms, one after the other, around a hanging courtyard with a splendid Baroque fountain and culminating in the Salone del Baldacchino and the Salone degli Arazzi. The second floor, although containing rooms intended for social use, but for a smaller circle of friends, was reserved for the private life of the family.

The Stanze al Genio Majolica Museum has an exhibition of almost 5000 examples of Italian majolica tiles from the 15th to the 19th century arranged in 8 rooms. The Museum is housed in a portion of the noble floor of the seventeenth-century Palazzo Torre Pirajno, in the municipality of Palermo in Via Giuseppe Garibaldi n. 11. The main floor has been recently restored and inside you can see eighteenth-century and nineteenth-century ceiling decorations and vintage lambries. The itinerary is divided into a house museum which is actually inhabited and is open to the public every day by reservation. The palace currently houses the collections of Francesca and Massimo Valsecchi and is open to the public. Reduced single ticket for Palazzo Butera and Teatro Massimo

The garden was built between 1861 and 1864 by the architect Giovan Battista Filippo Basile in Piazza Marina in Palermo, in the historic Kalsa district and was named after the national hero Giuseppe Garibaldi precisely to celebrate the birth of the Italian nation, which recently took place. . Among the many exotic plants found inside, the majestic Ficus macrophylla is certainly the main attraction being considered the largest tree in Europe and one of the oldest in Italy, with a height of 30 meters, a circumference of the trunk that exceeds 21 meters and a crown with a diameter of 50 meters. Inside you can admire some stuccos by the great Giacomo Serpotta, coming from the church of the Stigmata demolished to build the Massimo theater. Founded in 1542 at the behest of the Compagnia dei Bianchi, made up of ecclesiastics and gentlemen. The church stands on the small square of Doganella, above a high flight of steps. Built in the early 16th century to a design by Matteo Carnelivari, the Church of Santa Maria della Catena is considered a superb example of Catalan Gothic style, with some Renaissance influences. The church owes its name to the long chain attached to its outer wall, which closed off access to the ancient port of Palermo. On the outside, the original ashlar cladding can still be seen, as well as the original windows with tracery in the side lunettes. The building is preceded by a portico with three lowered arches, under which are three portals, with bas-reliefs by ANTONELLO GAGINI. The interior has three naves, with three apses. The nave is characterised by its ribbed vaults, while the side naves have barrel vaults. There are numerous decorations, mainly from the 18th century: noteworthy are the frescoes by Olivio Sozzi and two sarcophagi, one ancient and one from the 16th century.

Romanesque style, founded in the 12th century by Matteo d'Ajello, a notable in the service of the Norman kings. In 1197, Henry IV granted it to the order of the Teutonic Knights, to whom it remained for over three centuries. The salient façade is adorned with three orders of arcades that, on the first level, are enriched with decorative elements and frame the portals. The interior, with three naves, is simple and bare. The church also has a beautiful gem-columned cloister, unfortunately very damaged (it was bombed during World War II). Damaged several times, restored and remodelled, it owes its current appearance to the latest intervention aimed at restoring the original forms as far as possible. The simple façade features a rose window and a beautiful Gothic portal belonging to the original 13th-century building. It represents a terrace, built in the 19th century, between Porta Felice and Piazza Kalsa. The term 'naughty' derives from the Latin 'Captivae' or 'prisoners', used to identify widows (also in Sicilian, widow is said to be naughty), who were considered to be prisoners of the pain that mourning gave. For this reason, the terrace was used for their walk, allowing them to keep a certain distance from the classic walk that took place along the neighbouring Foro Italico

The Church of Santa Maria della Pietà has stood since 1658 in the ancient Kalsa district. It was built by the nuns of the Monastery of the same name who entrusted the design of the entire complex to the architect Fra Giacomo Amato. The construction, and especially the decoration, continued throughout the 18th century by talented artists and with the financial support of many noblewomen enclosed in the adjoining Monastery, which was cloistered at the time. The Monastery of Pieta, so large that it housed at least 80 professed nuns and many other converse nuns, also included in its complex the Palazzo Abatellis that served as a parlor, now the seat of the Regional Gallery of Sicily. The Church of Santa Maria della Pietà originated, therefore, as the great chapel of the monastery and has a single nave with high grilles on the walls, six side altars and a high choir, at the back of the façade, supported by Billiemi marble columns. Upon entering the church today, one can admire the magnificent, huge metal choir screen depicting a rising sun. Throughout the interior, but especially between the grilles, the great Serpotta decoration unfolds: all the Serpottas and their assistants worked in this church. The presbytery, formerly square, was transformed by Gian Maria Serpotta, who added a shallow apse, and contains a valuable late Baroque altar and a beautifully crafted tabernacle made of semi-precious stones. On the side walls, two large paintings by the knight Pietro dell'Aquila depict 'the return of the prodigal son' and 'the meeting between Abraham and Melchizedek in the promised land'. Worthy of note, in the first chapel on the right, is the panel painting by Vincenzo da Pavia depicting the 'pietà' or the dead Christ in the arms of his mother torn by grief, framed by a precious Baroque frame. In the other chapels, four paintings by the Manno brothers and a crucifix rich in patos on a tortoiseshell cross with silver decorations can be admired. The sub-chancel was embellished in 1722 with frescoes by the Flemish Guglielmo Borremans, who depicted scenes from the lives of Dominican saints. The church ceiling is the work of the painter Antonio Grano, who painted it in 1708 and depicted 'The Apotheosis of St Dominic'.
