Amazing craft beer, in our opinion the best in the area. Menu is small but very tasty, with new twists on many classic pub favorites. Todd recommends the soft shell crab sandwich (not on the menu- ask if they have it). Amy recommends the BBQ Belly Bread. And the Brewtine appetizer is a must. Get it with tater tots- trust us!!

Amazing pizza, yummy pub food and really good beer. Breakfast is surprisingly served and rather gourmet for a restaurant inside what used to be a car wash!! Fans of any Boston sports team cannot miss the decor… and check out the “scoreboard” up on the blackboard! Sorry, NY fans… We recommend the Rocky Marciano and Yak-Zie’s pizzas, as well as Todd’s own custom creation- hamburger, onion and jalapeño! (Seriously - try it)! The Car Wash Pretzels are great too. For breakfast, Todd recommends the steak and eggs and Amy loves the Breakfast Bruschetta.

Unbelievable BBQ right in the heart of Lake Placid. The brisket is their specialty, but honestly I’m not sure there’s anything not worth devouring here. A little pricey, but well worth it. Can get busy, but they open at 4 and if you don’t mind and early dinner, usually can walk right in around that time.

Local grill right in downtown Saranac Lake with American favorites and some tasty Mexican items as well. A little larger seating area than some local restaurants so in our experience can accommodate larger parties. Within walking distance of the house.

This might just be the best summer ice cream cone you’ll ever have!!! Tiny little roadside ice cream stand at the site of the Crystal Spring dairy that formerly delivered milk right to the doorsteps of local families. They have been making soft serve ice cream in the SAME VINTAGE MACHINE that serves you today since 1953. They have ONE FLAVOR every day… that’s it. But that is all you need. Most days it’s the theme of the day (Monday is nut, Thursday fruit etc) or the usual flavor of the day (chocolate, strawberry or raspberry) twisted with vanilla. Saturday is “Surprise Saturday” and the flavor combo could be anything! Some of our favorite Saturday flavors have been peach melba (peach twisted with black raspberry), Irish coffee (Irish cream twisted with coffee) and chocolate peppermint (chocolate twisted with pink peppermint). The fruit and nut surprise flavors can be awesome as well (banana twisted with vanilla- yum!!). Any hey- you just can’t beat chocolate and vanilla (every Sunday and Wednesday). The flavors are posted on their Facebook page weekly and daily along w great pics of everyone enjoying the ice cream. Few notes: Cash only. Lines can be LONG in the summer (cuz it’s that good) but move pretty quickly. Be careful entering and exiting off the highway. Parking is limited and sometimes you may need to get creative on a busy day. If you order a larger cone or it’s a particularly hot day, be prepared to eat the cone on your way back to the car or ask for a dish. You’ll see what happens to those who don’t along the way :-)

Hiking

Great place to take the family for a day outdoors and to experience the Adirondack woods and waters without getting too far off the beaten path. Trails are meticulously maintained by Paul Smith’s college and are some of the most well marked around. Many options, some less than a mile; others more of a challenge and distance including a trail to a mountain summit (9 Miles round trip). Free in the summer for hiking; in the winter there is a small fee to cross country ski that covers the cost of maintaining the ski trails. We recommend the Barnum Brook trail (0.6 miles, very easy and much of it boardwalk), the Heron Marsh trail (3 mile loop with lots of water and wildlife to see, numerous viewing areas/lookouts), the Boreal Life trail (1 mile loop with a long boardwalk and more forest and native plants to see, as well as a pond lookout), or the Black Pond Loop which is a little more rugged and secluded than the trails that begin at the visitor center but also well worth the time with lean to’s, bridges and beautiful scenery. We often also combine pieces of several trails in one day to get a variety of views and environments. Make sure to either download the trail map from the website before you go or pick one up in the visitor’s center. All trails are colored coded on the map and marked as such making navigation super easy. The VIC is in Paul Smiths and about a 20 minute drive from the house but absolutely worth it. Make sure to stop at Donnelly’s for ice cream (see food scene) in the summer after a day of hiking.
