There are than 3,500 animals at the zoo. Right now with the zoo operating at limited capacity, the best times to go are when it opens in the morning and after lunch in the afternoon during weekdays. Early mornings and evenings are the best times on October weekends. Kids ages 11 and under go free to the San Diego Zoo in October so attendance is higher than normal. The busiest times are roughly between about 11 a.m.–1p.m.
