Construction began on The Customs House in 1863, taking around three years to complete. Designed by Mr. Francis Reynolds, the iconic building served the flourishing port of Port MacDonnell and is steeped in history. It is a great pleace to go for a coffee and awesome home made scones and cakes.

Parks & Nature

Discover the spring-fed limestone ponds at the Ewens Ponds Conservation Park by snorkelling along the shallow channels or scuba diving into the ponds. Or just admire the beautiful ponds from the pontoons The channels connect three basin-shaped ponds which are approximately 10 metres deep. The clarity of the water enables plants to grow underwater to a depth of about six metres. Some of these plants are not found growing fully submerged underwater anywhere else in the world.

‘Hells Hole’ – a massive massive sink-hole filled with dark blue fresh water. The attraction site is located in Lower Glenelg National Park near the depths of the pine forest, in South Australia. At this particular place, enthusiastic divers get to have a glimpse of what lays inside the cave. For checks and regulation purposes, all people are required to obtain a verified permit from the attraction site first, before they can be granted full access to dive into Hells Hole sink-hole. Those not wishing to dive, can enjoy the grandeur of the sink-hole from the top and gaze down into the blue water.

Council have developed a theme for the design, construct, display and activities that underpin the entire Main Corner Complex and the role it plays in building community capacity and learning. The fundamental question was "What makes Mount Gambier unique?" The answer lies in our volcano – that one natural phenomenon that created the foundation of Mount Gambier and the fundamental elements of Earth – Fire – Water that emerged from the volcano to bring us life. The elements of Earth – Fire – Water are uniquely Mount Gambier and the building features internal and external displays showcasing these elements. In addition the Cave Garden environment is transformed at night to tell the unique Dreamtime Stories of our indigenous persons. The construction, the displays and the programs and activities ensure that the Main Corner Complex will be alive, adding to the vibrancy of the Garden Square precinct and to the Mount Gambier community.
