Based in a revamped nineteenth century pub just five minutes from North Parade, Roots is a York’s one and only Michelin star restaurant. It’s run by the team behind the Black Swan at Oldstead, which was once named as the best restaurant in the world by TripAdvisor so you can expect a top-quality dining experience. The menu is based around local seasonal produce so what is on offer will vary depending on when you visit. But whatever time of the year it is, you can expect a winning blend of innovation and tradition. Booking essential.

If you want to try contemporary British cooking at its very best we suggest a visit to Skosh. They serve an array of snacks and small plates allowing you to mix and match to create your own dining experience. Order a variety of plates & share a tapas style meal or build your own multi-course tasting menu. It’s quite expensive but it’s a great experience if you’re willing to try something a little different. Booking essential.

There are lots of Indian restaurants in York but our absolute favourite is 29 States. We’ve travelled extensively in India and we know authentic Indian cuisine when we taste it… and this place really hits the spot! It’s not the typical UK High Street Indian restaurant so you might not find all your old favourites on offer but you might just find a new one. We’d recommend the Punjabi shrimp masala, the Goan king prawn curry and the shahi paneer. And we absolutely love their Delhi-style dal makhani. Phone ahead to book a table with views of Clifford’s Tower.

Located above the deli of the same name on Goodramgate, Little Italy is cosy, family-owned restaurant that’s been in business for over 25 years and is probably York’s best Italian eatery. Their freshly made pasta is to die for. The spaghetti with prawns, white wine, garlic & parsley in a rich tomato sauce is a personal favourite but everything we’ve tried is great. Please note that they don’t serve pizza. If that’s what you’re after, there are plenty of pizzerias to chose from. We’d suggest visiting ASK. Yes, it’s a chain but the location in the old Assembly Rooms is truly stunning.

This stylish bistro is a great place for a romantic meal for two. You’ll find them on Gillygate, a short walk from North Parade. Their menu changes all the time but it always offers great value, especially if you take advantage of their early bird menu which is available from 1700-1900 from Tuesday to Thursday and costs just £15 for two courses or £19 for three. Their hearty breakfasts are also a great way to start the day.

There’s a great array of street food on offer at the Shambles Market Food Court. If you can’t decide we’d recommend checking out Los Moros for delicious North African & Middle Eastern food or Nukkad Indian Street Food for amazing kathi rolls, samosa chaat & dosas. You’ll also find Thai, BBQ, pizza, crepes, wraps and more. Order at the counter and grab an open-air table. A fun place for a spot of lunch.

You’ll find the Brew & Brownie a short walk from North Parade through the leafy Museum Gardens. It’s a great little cafe serving top-notch coffee and cake. Try their American pancake stacks for breakfast or tuck into a tasty sandwich, toastie or salad for lunch.

If you’re exploring the city walls, we’d recommend taking a break at Gatehouse Coffee. It’s located inside Walmgate Bar, one of the gateways through the ancient walls. They serve great coffee, pastries and paninis but half the fun is just exploring the place. Make sure you climb the stairs to the amazing roof terrace which gives you the chance to sip a brew in a truly unique location.
