Probably our favorite of the classic older restaurants in Nags Head, Tale of The Whale is a sound front restaurant with great views of the Roanoke sound and delicious seafood. Highly recommended. If you are trying to save a few dollars they usually run an "early bird" special with a discount for those seated by a certain time. Please call them to confirm that offer and time.

Excellent location to grab a pint of your favorite microbrew. This place normally has 40+ beers on tap as well as beer to take away. The location has a nice little bar, has a super easy going vibe and the staff is always friendly. Highly recommend.

Neighborhoods
This where you are! Technically the hideaway is in North Kill Devil Hills (the best part lol) and close to just about everything. You are roughly equal distance to Corolla/Corova as to locations on Hatteras island. So as a base of exploration, Kill Devil Hills is the best area of the Outer Banks. The really great thing about this neighborhood in particular is the easy access to beaches and to the miles of bike path along Bay drive.

If you are picking one lighthouse to visit, this is definitely the most iconic. Tallest lighthouse on the east coast and adjacent to Cape Hatteras seashore. If you have a 4 X 4 vehicle, you can take the ramp onto the beach here and drive out to Cape Point, a spectacular spit of land that juts out into the ocean. Truly a breathtaking place to spend the day or a few hours.

There is no development here but there are great beaches that are seldom used even in summer. Go here if you need some solitude and want to enjoy the beach in complete peace. You can park anywhere along the highway. Simply pull all the way off the road, lock your car and head across the dune to the beach. Caution: Be careful parking in deep sand. If you have a 4 X 4 vehicle you will be fine, but if your vehicle is 2 wheel drive, make sure not to completely pull off the pavement. Always keep a couple of wheels on the pavement so your car has the traction to get out of the sand. Be careful about this. Extraction services are expensive!

A six minute bike ride away from the Hideaway, this is a fun place to pass an hour or two. There is a traditional putt putt type golf course and electric go carts that are pretty fun.

Fun Disc Golf Course very close to the Hideaway. Can be accessed by car or bike. If Using the bikes, turn right out of the Hideaway, turn left (south) on Bay Drive, and follow without turning till you reach 1st street. Turn Right on First street and stay straight until the cut de sac. Take the short bike path and turn left on Colington Rd. Follow until you see First Flight High School on the left and turn left at that Light. At the Roundabout take the first exit. On the next roundabout, at the end of the paved road, continue slightly right onto the gravel road and ride to the end. The Disc golf course is at the end of the rd. If going by car you will not go this way, follow your GPS.

All public beach accesses and sound accesses in Dare County (and Currituck County) are FREE. Parking at some accesses in high season will fill up quickly in the morning! Be prepared. If one access is full, usually you can ride south or north until you find one with spaces. Be aware that accesses with facilities such as a shower or bathrooms will tend to fill up quicker than the more primitive accesses. Southern Shores and Duck have accesses but they are NOT PUBLIC.
