"Ghyll" comes from the Viking word meaning mountain stream. Ghyllscrambling is working your way up or down a stream using a variety of techniques. These can include jumping, sliding, scrambling, swimming, using ropes and abseiling. It's a great way to see beautiful scenery and discover hidden places. Chris, Andy and Eva their dog aim for providing a more personalised service, not constrained by time. www.ghyllscrambling.co.uk chris@ghyllscrambling.co.uk andy@ghyllscrambling.co.uk 07974390977 Ashlea House, 67 High Brigham, Cockermouth CA13 0TG

The traditional fell village of Caldbeck is situated under the Northern Fells of the Lake District, almost equidistant from Penrith, Carlisle, Keswick, Wigton and Cockermouth. The first building in Caldbeck was thought to be a hospice for travellers built by the monks from the priory at Carlisle. Later, in 1112, the first part of St Kentigern’s Church, which is still the heart of the village, was built. On the riverbank behind the Church is St Mungo’s well, a spring made holy by Kentigern. The churchyard is the resting place of Mary Harrison, (the Beauty of Buttermere), and John Peel the famous huntsman. Caldbeck is named after the river (Cold Beck) on which is stands. This river and its tributaries provided the water power for the important industrial development of the 17th and 18th Centuries – corn mills, woollen mills, bobbin mills a paper mill and a brewery. Many of these old buildings still exist in the village. There is a pleasant walk from the car park, past the village duck pond (old clay dubs), up to the Howk (85: NY 317398), a limestone gorge containing beautiful waterfalls and the picturesque ruins of the old Bobbin Mill. The bobbin mill once had the largest waterwheel in the country, at 3 feet wide, and 42 feet diameter. Priests Mill is an old watermill built by a rector of Caldbeck on the riverbank just below the Church. It is in a secluded position, almost hidden from the road. The award winning restoration now houses a restaurant, and various interesting shops. Caldbeck village is quaint, with a village green, the muddy ducks tea rooms, Oddfellow public house and Midtown milk House where you can fill up your milk bottles with fresh milk and if you really fancy- add a flavour to create your own milkshake!

It's often said that to see the big hills in all their glory go to a smaller neighbour. Wainwrights' Binsey is just that. Looking around from the summit much of the North of Skiddaw group is laid out, as well as the spine of Ullock Pike, Longside Edge. In the distance are the hills above Whinlatter, and west to Buttermere. Northwards to Scotland, the hills of Dumfries and Galloway are visible across the Solway Firth. In fact standing on its own, as it does, gives fantastic 360° views. Distance: 3.0km (1.9 miles) Ascent: 190m Min. time: 55 mins Terrain: 1 - easy Bog Factor: 1 - none Tech Diff: 1 - easy Easy walking on grass. Dog issues: No (sheep occasionally and nesting bird restrictions)

Arguably the most famous waterfall in the Lake District, Aira Force has everything you need for a perfect day out in the Lakes. ‘Aira’ allegedly comes from the Old Norse words eyrr for ‘gravel bank’ and á, meaning ‘river’. Fors is also a Norse word, commonly meaning ‘waterfall’. The area has been landscaped in the late 1700’s with over half a million native and ornamental trees. The waterfall is the rainwater from the fells and stands at a height of 150 meters above sea level. One kilometre before entering the lake the beck makes the 20-metre fall known as Aira Force and is framed by two beautiful Victorian era bridges. The most popular way to see the waterfall is the 2.1km circular loop taking around an hour (with lots of photo stops!). Along the trail you’ll spot a ‘wish tree’ take a coin and see if your wish comes true too! For a longer walk you could try Gowbarrow Fell.
