Beers & Bars

Barley Brown's Tasting Room (and Brewpub) are destinations in and of themselves, bringing beer aficionados from all around. If you enjoy a good (and by good I mean award-winning) microbrew, high tables, and long, beautiful bars with friendly, local ambiance then you will not want to miss checking out the Tasting Room. In addition to their growlers, you can also get Barley Brown's merchandise here. You can also order certain items from the Brewpub's menu if you are there during Brewpub hours.

Main Event is a great all-around bar & grill. With a long, beautiful bar, lots of tall tables, a large booth-style round table in the window and more in the back, there is something for just about anybody pretty much any time of day. In fact, I have to give a shout-out to the owner, Kari, for fighting through all of the Covid-19 restrictions to keep her business open, safe and in line with the ever-changing restrictions. While all of the bars & restaurants that stayed afloat through that deserve accolades, Main Event in particular worked to stay open their regular hours and maintain as much normalcy as possible, so be sure to be kind and generous to the staff that serve you there. They in particular have fought a good fight! They have an extensive tap menu (including several local brews), plenty of great drinks & signature cocktails and a solid American traditional menu. My favorite part of their menu to order from is their starters, which are typically an easy lunch in and of themselves. They also serve tasty burgers & sandwiches, wings & all the fried good things, and if you're looking for something light, even their house salad is pretty solid and full of a variety of vegetables. Main Event also hosts karaoke, though I don't know when that usually happens- but if karaoke is your thing, this is the place in town I'd aim for.

This new little brewery in town serves their own local brews, some wines from some local vineyards (including the Copper Belt) and offers snacks alongside (no kitchen) and allows you to bring your own food in. They also offer prepared special cheese & nut snack packs from The Cheese Fairy located in the Copper Belt on Main Street- which is a nice consolation prize if you missed their hours in person, and a nice upgrade if you just popped in for a beer.

Food scene

AJ's Corner Brick is located in what is quite likely Baker City's oldest standing building. Built in 1867, it has a charm- an intimate warmth to it that is evoked partly just by walking in the door, partly by interacting with its dedicated owner, Jo and her manager Ang, and partly by enjoying the spectacular American traditional menu. The hardest thing about going to the Corner Brick (or the Brick as I like to call it) is deciding! From their daily soup and salads (the spinach salad is my go-to) to their signature burgers from a local ranch (the Hells Canyon Burger has the heat I crave) to their pizzas (try the Thai!), they do each with care and creativity and leave you feeling fed body and soul. The beer selection is small, but they do serve Barley Brown's Pallet Jack which is my personal favorite and is BB's most award-winning microbrew, so don't just take my word for it! Other Drinks: --Bloody Mary-- They make the best Bloody Mary's in town, not batting an eye. --Hot Chocolate-- For the kiddos on a cold day, the hot cocoa with the works is amazing. Whipped cream and sprinkles!

Sweet Wife Baking is a wonderful little home-grown bakery that has moved into the old Stockman's bar on Main Street and has brought with it an updated warmth and charm that wafts into the street every time the door opens. Honestly, once you walk in, you really can't go wrong. I particularly love the lavender cardamom knot with a chai tea or a hot coffee. But be sure to get there early, because like most bakeries, the good stuff goes at breakfast!

Charley's is my kids' favorite destination on walks downtown in the warm weather months. They have wonderful ice creams and a full deli-menu. It is everything I want in an ice cream parlor and more, the perfect lunch or treat stop with kids and family.

If you're looking for the BEST pizza in town with variety and beer on tap, go to Paizano's. Classic pizza parlor seating, nothing special there, but the menu is extensive & creative and one could argue, easily outpaces the venue. It's also a great option for take-out, especially if you're looking to feed a crowd (check out their GIANT pizza for something utterly and delightfully ridiculous in size) or a small country for a week.

Outdoor Adventuring

This is a great launchpad for all of the outdoor recreation in Baker County and beyond. The Trailhead not only sells gear for all kinds of outdoor sports, it rents & repairs and is the Baker City headquarters for Anthony Lakes Ski Resort- which means they know things. If you want to know things, too, this is where you go. Bonus tip- they have a small bar inside with about four taps, and they are VERY cold pours.
