Keiss is one of the more picturesque and better-preserved of the small 19th-century herring-and salmon-fishing stations on the eastern coast of Caithness. Keiss Bay was inspected and given qualified approval as a haven by Thomas Telford in 1790, but the small harbour with pier, slipway and stilling-basin was not built until 1820.

Kirk Tofts Broch in Caithness. One of the most important and best preserved brochs in Caithness is located near the road in Keiss. The site was excavated by sir Francis Tress Barry in 19th century, while the modern excavations unearthed large amounts of pottery (including vessels and occasional Samian ware) and some luxury goods. The circular shape of the broch with it's outbuidlings and forecourt are still perfectly distinguishable, as well as traces of intra-mural features. There is evidence, that the broch has been re-modelled in Pictish period.
