To the west of Tennoji Park is Shin-Sekai, one of Osaka's most interesting neighborhoods. This area has remained largely untouched over the years. At the beginning of the 20th Century the area flourished, and pulsed with amusement attractions and restaurants that drew enormous crowds. Today, little of the bustle remains, but many old eating and drinking establishments can still be found. One highlight is Jan-Jan Yokocho Lane, which runs along one side of Shin-Sekai. This dining and shopping street is where laborers who rebuilt Osaka after World War II gathered, and it still contains Japanese-style pubs and cheap cafeteria-like restaurants with highly unique menus that include hormone-yaki (barbecued cattle organs) and kushi-yaki (Japanese shish kebab); it's an entertainment district for locals, much as it has always been. The name of this alley comes from the "jan jan" strumming sound of the Japanese banjo that waitresses used to play to attract customers.

Arts & Culture

Japan Mint was established in Osaka by the Meiji government in order to modernize the coinage system. The inaugural ceremony was held on April 4th,1871 and minting was commenced with Western style facilities that were epochmaking in Japan in those days. Since heavy industry had not yet developed in Japan at that time, all heavy equipment had to be imported. In addition, factories were built within the Mint Compound for the production of sulfuric acid, soda, coal gas and coke. Telegraphic communication and telephones were set up and various light equipment such as balances and even a clock were manufactured wholly on the premises since most of the various kinds of equipment necessary for coinage were unavailable in Japan in those days. It was even necessary to manufacture ink. Another first was the adoption of double entry book keeping. The Mint also took the lead in abolishing the traditional topknot and the wearing of swords, and in enforcing the wearing of Western clothes by the staff. In these ways, as a pioneer in introducing European and American culture to Japan during the early years of the Meiji Era (1868 to 1912), Japan Mint played an important part in the rise of modern industry and culture in this country. Thus, it is generally said that Osaka, now our country's center of commerce and industry is indebted to the Mint for the city's subsequent prosperity. From then on, with change of the times, the Mint expanded to include, in addition to the main operation of coinage, the production of orders (decorations), medals of honor and metallic art objects ; the analysis and testing of metal ores and minerals ; the fineness certification of precious metal wares (hallmarking) ; etc. The Mint became an Incorporated Administrative Agency on April 1, 2003.

Namba Parks (なんばパークス Nanba Pākusu) is an office and shopping complex located in Namba-naka Nichome, Naniwa-ku, Osaka, Japan, the south of Namba Station on Nankai Railway. It consists of a high office building called Parks Tower and a 120-tenant shopping mall with rooftop garden. Namba Parks was developed by Jon Jerde of The Jerde Partnership in the footprint of the since closed Osaka Stadium. There is a carnival mall on the 1st floor. For shopping, various shops are available on 2nd to 5th floor. Casual restaurants are located on 6th floor while fine-dining restaurants are on the 7th and 8th floor, where you can choose from various kinds of food, such as Japanese, Korean, and Italian. The 9th floor (topmost) has landscape garden. There is also an amphitheater for live shows, as well as space for small personal vegetable gardens and wagon shops. Namba Parks was conceived as a large park, a natural intervention in Osaka's dense urban condition. Alongside a 30-story tower, the project features a lifestyle commercial center crowned with a rooftop park that crosses multiple blocks while gradually ascending eight levels. In addition to providing a highly visible green component in a city where nature is sparse, the sloping park connects to the street, making it easy for passers-by to enter its groves of trees, clusters of rocks, cliffs, lawn, streams, waterfalls, ponds and outdoor terraces. Beneath the park, a canyon carves a path through specialty retail, entertainment and dining venues.
