Sightseeing

Dozens of miles of carriage roads for walking or biking (even road bikes can navigate, though a gravel bike is best); several beautiful waterfalls, many beautiful vistas and vantage points; this is one of the finest state parks in the U.S.

Awosting Falls is our go-to walk before or after dinner. It's about 40 minutes each way; the first third of a mile on Lyons Rd, then the rest on a beautiful, level carriage road.

Peterskill is part of Minnewaska State Park, but has its own entrance and parking lot. It's the one place in Minnewaska that has rock climbing. The bulk of the area's climbing is in the Mohonk Preserve, but what's great about Peterskill is that you can walk in from the house in about 20 minutes. Take Lyons Rd to the Trapps carriage road. Go toward Awosting but in a couple of minutes you switch to the (well-marked) cross trail that takes you directly to 44/55 and the Peterskill entrance.

This is the beating heart of climbing in the northeast. 1000 routes, wild exposed moderates, amazing harder climbs, short approaches, and a friendly, welcoming climbing scene. If you've never been the Gunks, are coming here for climbing, and want any advice or suggestions, I've been climbing here for 30 years. There's also amazing biking and walking in the Preserve, up to the Mohonk Mountain House (which is separately owned) and even beyond. A good starter outing is Undercliff/Overcliff — from the West Trapps parking lot, follow signs to the Uberfall and keep walking all the way to Rhododendron Bridge, then veer left onto Overcliff, which will take you back to the bridge over 44/55 and the parking lot.

Food scene

We love this place. The wine list is meh, the beer list not even that, and they only take cash (there's an ATM on the premises) but the food is to die for and they make their own pasta and bread. Terrific service, too. As of this writing, they're open Wednesdays through Sundays.

If you're like us, one of the reasons to Airbnb is to cook our own food and drink our own wine and beer. Our usual food shopping circuit is to head into New Paltz. First stop is the Wallkill View Farm Market, right on 299, a little ways before the bridge across the river. Whatever we can't find there, our next stop is the Health & Nutrition Center in the main shopping plaza, the one with the movie theatre. Our last stop, for anything else, is the Tops supermarket just catty-corner to the health food store. Their selection of produce, including organic, is pretty good by supermarket standards, by the way.

Gadaleto's is also on that basic circuit that starts with the farm stand on 299, but it's important enough to deserve its own entry. Amazing fresh fish; they supply all the restaurants in the area, sell direct, and also have a restaurant. (There's a funny sign when you first walk in with opposing arrows and the words "Raw" and "Cooked.") Salmon, swordfish, sushi-grade tuna, shrimp; it's all super fresh (and expensive and worth it).

K&E has a pretty wide selection of beer, cider, and soft drinks. One caution—if you're super into craft beers, especially IPAs, this is a great place, but watch the expiration dates, because they don't. (If you're super into craft beer, especially IPAs, and don't mind driving, there's a truly amazing distributor in Poughkeepsie, Half Time. If you've ever done an Untappd beer fest, your 12-pack was probably shipped out of there!)

If you're into fine dining, you're probably better off on the other side of the river, but Spy can hold its own, and has a pretty good wine list to boot. High Falls is a pretty cool town for eating; there's a bunch of other moderate good places as well. I'd especially mention the funky Egg's Nest, which has a nice outdoor area, for its brunch.

If for some strange reason you're not cooking your own breakfast with delicious local eggs from the New Paltz health food store, the High Falls Food Coop, or any of the myriad other local sources, and want a classic NJ/NY diner breakfast, the Plaza Diner is what you're looking for.
