The wild Prassano gorge is located 10 km southeast of Rethymnon. Starting south of Prasses village, it offers a three-hour walk through the stunning gigantic rocks and through some relatively hard accesses, which make the passage very interesting. The Prassano gorge is located next to the bare hills of Gargana. It ends in Platanias, east of the town of Rethymno. The area is quiet, with old platans, ideal for relaxing and picnics. Prassano is accessible only from June to October, because of the water flowing through it. It is a very important biotope of Crete, since it hosts buzzards, a small population of Bonelli's eagles, as well as the last four remaining couples of vulture in the Balkans!

The endless, organised sandy beach of Rethymno, more than 12 Kms long, in the heart of the town is popular with families, because of its gently shelving sand and palm tree lined promenade. The beach stretches from the town of Rethymno in an easterly direction towards the areas of Perivolia, Adelianos Kampos until Skaleta. It can get busy in the summer months but it’s quieter towards the west, past Missiria and Platanes.

Panagia Halevi monastery is located about 6km south of Rethymnon, on the way to Chromonastiri. It's another Venetian monastery of Crete, which is deserted and surely worth restoring. The monastery was probably founded in the 16th century and finally abandoned after the end of the Turkish occupation. From the monastery survives the single-aisle church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary (Panagia), with its magnificent flameshaped windows, and around it you’ll see the ruins of the rest monastic buildings which were built with fortress-like architecture. The monastery has been declared a protected monument by the Greek state.

The Postminoan Necropolis of Armeni is situated 9km south of the town of Rethymnon. The greatest Late Minoan cemetery (c. 1400-1200 BC) was discovered on a shallow hill by accident some decades ago. Μore that 200 underground burial chambers have been discovered and it’s still ongoing. All the tombs were dug into the rock, and each consists of a corridor and a chamber. The beautiful monastery of Arkadi can be found in the foothills of the western Ida (Psiloritis) Mountain. The Cretans consider the monastery as a symbol of freedom from the turks. During the revolt in 1866, hundreds of refugees and Cretan freedom fighters sought sanctuary in the wine store rooms with the monks, where there was also a stash of gunpowder. When the Turks made their way towards their last refuge, the Abbot gave the order to fire the gunpowder. Hundreds of Cretans and Turks were killed; giving real meaning to the battle cry of Crete - “freedom or death”! November 8th is a day of celebrations in Arkadi and Rethymno.

In the nearby village of Agia Irini (Saint Irene) there is the homonymous old Monastery, which is considered to date back to the 14th century. After restoration works that started in 1989, the monastery was given a new life due to the eager activities of the nuns. There is an ecclesiastical museum in the Monastery area, called Holy Trinity Ecclesiastical museum of Saint Irene. Today the monastery operates as a core of protection and preservation of folkloric tradition such as handicrafts, especially weaving and embroidery, and inside the monastery there is an exposition of needlework made by the nuns themselves! Built on the rocky mountainside, the Monastery is a unique sight!

The Neratze mosque on the corner of Ethniki Antistaseos and Vernaridou was known as the Church of Santa Maria during Venetian times. It used to be part of an Augustinian friary. From the original building only the East and the North side survived. The elaborate entrance on the North side gives one an impression of the building's original splendour. During Turkish occupation the roof was replaced by three small domes. In 1890 a minaret was added. The mosque is now mainly used for lectures, concerts and theatre performances.
