Gerani is a small, typical Cretan village witch stands on a hill above a small bay. The village is very close to the lively city of Rethymno, as well as some beautiful sandy beaches. The Gerani Cave is worth visiting as well…it was discovered in 1968 during the construction of the new national road from Rethymno to Chania. Its 6 halls display magnificent stalagmites. Archaeological research within the cave has brought to light a variety of findings dating back to the Neolithic period. Some of this findings are exhibited in the Archeological Museum of Rethymno.

The endless, organised sandy beach of Rethymno, more than 12 Kms long, in the heart of the town is popular with families, because of its gently shelving sand and palm tree lined promenade. The beach stretches from the town of Rethymno in an easterly direction towards the areas of Perivolia, Adelianos Kampos until Skaleta. It can get busy in the summer months but it’s quieter towards the west, past Missiria and Platanes.

Panagia Halevi monastery is located about 6km south of Rethymnon, on the way to Chromonastiri. It's another Venetian monastery of Crete, which is deserted and surely worth restoring. The monastery was probably founded in the 16th century and finally abandoned after the end of the Turkish occupation. From the monastery survives the single-aisle church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary (Panagia), with its magnificent flameshaped windows, and around it you’ll see the ruins of the rest monastic buildings which were built with fortress-like architecture. The monastery has been declared a protected monument by the Greek state.

Μore that 200 underground burial chambers have been discovered and it’s still ongoing. All the tombs were dug into the rock, and each consists of a corridor and a chamber. The corridor is composed either of a staircase or a ramp. The wealthier tombs possessed tombstones of different sizes. The main finds in the tombs were clay larnakes, fine decorated pottery, bronze arms, utensils and ornaments, as well as sealstones and necklaces from semiprecious stones.
