You can also see the statue from where you board the ferry (South Ferry) but you can get closer if you take the Staten Island Ferry. It's a 30 minute ride and leaves every half hour. But while you wait there are usually some musicians and street performers to entertain you while you wait. Plus, you're in the park! They give a maximum of 2 tickets per person in line.
