The center of Milan was once crisscrossed with a series of interconnecting canals, called “navigli,” used to transport goods and people. Two still exist just south of the city center, and the surrounding Navigli District is one of Milan’s trendiest areas, full of galleries, cafés, restaurants, and clubs. It’s a hot spot worth a visit.

Typical milanese area, packed with bars, pubs and restaurants (and people, especially in summer nights). Years ago people used to swim and do laundry in there. You can reach Venice from here, on small boats. Join a group and do it some day! On the way - in Veneto - you will see the beautiful Palladian villas ;)

Enjoy the new Darsena The Darsena is the body of water that connects Navigli’s two canals today. Recently regenerated, it’s now a popular place for an aperitivo. You can grab a drink at one of the local bars or from one of the many stands that appear on summer evenings and sit along the harbour’s bank, dangling your feet over the water. If you’re there before it closes, make sure to pop into the indoor market on the bank to pick up food to snack on or cook. Go in search of vintage As one of the world’s fashion capitals, people come to Milan for the designer boutiques – but venture outside the Quadrilatero della Moda and you’ll find a thriving thrift-store scene. The Navigli area has a particular concentration of offerings. From Corso Porta Ticinese down to Navigli proper, you’ll find a series of independent boutiques, luxury consignment stores and even an Italian army surplus centre on Naviglio Grande. If vintage furniture is more your bag (and you have a big enough suitcase), don’t miss the Mercato dell’Antiquariato that sets up all along the banks of Naviglio Grande and the surrounding streets on the last Sunday of every month.

The “aperitivo” or happy hour is a fantastic way to start your night out, meet new people and relax after a long day of shopping and sightseeing. The “aperitivo” is a wonderful way to get a glimpse of the authentic Italian lifestyle. It lasts from about 6pm to 8 or 9pm and you get to enjoy a drink and a buffet at a moderate price (it’s usually around 10 €) with lounge music playing in the background. Aperitivo is very popular in Milan so there are plenty of great places where you can enjoy it. One of these is certainly the area of Navigli, which has a fantastic atmosphere and is literally filled with bars and pubs of all kinds. My favorites are Maya and Spritz.
