Stenshuvud National Park was formed in 1986 and is located in the south-eastern part of the province of Skåne. Listen to a brief description about Stenshuvud National Park (mp3) For a long time the area has been affected by grazing and farming. Stone mounds piled up to clear land, stone fences and ancient remains in the area bear witness to the presence of people and their impact on the countryside. Deciduous forests predominate The national park occupies 400 hectares, including 80 hectares of sea. Stenshuvud mountain itself consists of three peaks. The northern one, rising 97 metres above sea level, is the highest. To a large extent, the area is covered with forest, hornbeam being the predominant type of tree. Older trees with broad canopies, such as beech and oak, remain from the time when grazing took place in the area. Today grazing livestock have returned to the national park, keeping the countryside open. The many different biotopes in the national park contribute to an abundant variety of flora and fauna. Here you will find sandy heaths, wet meadows, rocky coastland and beautiful sandy beaches. Below the mountain on the west side, there is a bog and alder marsh. The national park has abundant flora with some rare species such as barren strawberry, black spleenwort, sand pink, pasqueflower and immortelle. Some tips: Beautiful hike to Stenshuvuds lighthouse. Start at Naturum and walk under the foliage along the forest road into sometimes the trees, up and north towards the top of Stenshuvud. Follow the directions on the left towards "Hällevik 1.5" and round your head instead of going up to the peaks. Here, significantly fewer people roam, but the forest is very beautiful. SHINY FOREST STARS AND THE GIANT STONE After a while, the path slopes down towards the mirror-shiny forest stars (unless they have dried out). So beautiful. Jätten Sten, who gave his name to Stenshuvud, lives in a cave in the precipice just above, so keep a close eye! A little further ahead, it may be possible to graze cows in the forest, but they are probably kind. Turn right at the sign that points to "Krivareboden 1.6". If you turn left instead, you end up in Hällevik, but to continue the hike, it is the right that counts! Now you can soon glimpse the sea between the trees. Make sure not to miss the path down to the beautiful lighthouse out on the cliffs. For those who like to swim from rocks, it goes great here. It is also possible to jump on the rocks all the way to the beach, but it requires a firm foot. OH-LA-LA WHAT A BEACH Otherwise, walk the rocky path inside the forest. As soon as you reach the beach meadows there is a wonderful swimming area on the left. Maybe you are now at Skåne's most beautiful beach? Also check out the fine maze in the grass some distance away. Otherwise, continue straight until you reach the fishing huts. Then it's time to turn inland, and follow the paved path up to the car park again. Do not forget to check out Naturum to learn more about Stenshuvud and especially Jätten Sten.
