This strenuous 4.7-mile hike starts off leading up a staircase of petrified lava along part of Fatman’s Loop trail, ending at Mount Elden’s summit. You’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Flagstaff and the surrounding area, plus close-up views of the mountain's geology. The lower part passes through a mixed pinyon-juniper woodland and ponderosa pine forest changing to mixed conifers higher up. An especially interesting tree is the Alligator Juniper. Near the top is an area devastated by a huge wildfire in 1977 and you’ll see how nature recovers, with aspen trees growing where pines once were. Elden Lookout Trail connects to Oldham Trail at the top making an extended hike possible.

Elden Lookout trail is a 6.3 mile (2300 foot elevation gain) heavily trafficked out and back trail located on the east end of flagstaff near Safeway. It features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. Best times to hike is between April through November.
