Kotoku-in (高徳院) is a Buddhist temple of the Pure Land sect in the city of Kamakura in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Contributions for the Great Buddha began in 1252, and construction took several decades. The Kamakura Buddha sits outside against a dramatic backdrop of wooded hills. The Kamakura Buddha was indeed once housed in a temple like the Nara Buddha, but a huge tidal wave destroyed the wooden structure.
