A peninsula, and former military establishment, resting against the city of Vallejo, Mare Island is a favorite visiting spot of locals and travelers alike. The island offers historical building tours, golf and wedding venues for beautiful views of the surrounding land and waters.

Because Vallejo has a long and rich maritime history the Mare Island Historic Park Foundation is a great place to learn all about it. Vallejo also houses the Cal Maritime Academy which is the only Maritime Academy on the West Coast.

For over a century, Mare Island was the Navy's Naval Shipyard. The whole shipyard is listed as a National Historic Landmark.
