It is a very atmospheric area, an architectural monument of the industrial age. The installation of leather processing crafts took place between 1830 and 1840. For Tabakaria of Chania, the place chosen was the most suitable: quite far and at the same time close to the city, in a location with abundant groundwater, brackish water, next to a shallow sea that was useful for the first stage of skin treatment. In the 1950s there were more than 80 tanneries, while today only six are still operating.

The most beautiful neiborhoud in the city. Old abandoned buildings, great for photos!
“Tabakaria” is the Greek word for “Tanneries” (leather processing factories) and takes the name from the factories that once operated here. The buildings that once housed the tanneries are left in the area almost intact. Only time has been allowed to leave its marks on the buildings and has turned them into backdrops and canvases for the local photographs. The area holds a mystic sense of bygone times and although many of the buildings which worked as tanneries now look like ruins, there is surely more than meets the eye. Walking around Tabakaria feels like a journey back in time with a true nostalgic charm.
